John Cena Shares Cryptic Message to WWE Fans on His 49th Birthday

Days after hosting WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, WWE legend John Cena celebrated his 49th birthday on Thursday, April 23.

On his birthday, the 17-time World Champion shared a cryptic message on X and hinted that he had “something special” in store for the WWE universe.

While replying to a birthday shoutout from Complex, Cena wrote, “Man, if only it were 2023 again! I might have different business at WWE Backlash. Alas, the years pass. I am still gonna try to do something epic in Tampa for 5/9. I promised Club WWE something special… stay tuned. ”

Cena famously retired his jorts and ended his in-ring career in December after a year-long retirement tour. So, it’s unlikely that his surprise includes a match at Backlash.

Perhaps, as he did during the two-night WrestleMania takeover in Las Vegas, Cena could make a celebrity appearance at the pay-per-view.

During his in-ring career, John Cena had several memorable moments at WWE Backlash.

Cena competed in his first WWE title shot against Brock Lesnar at Backlash 2003. Three years later, he defended the championship in a triple threat match against Triple H and Edge at Backlash 2006.

Notably, Cena defended the WWE Undisputed Championship against his longtime rival Randy Orton at Backlash 2025 in St. Louis. Their match at Enterprise Center marked the first matchup between the two in which Cena was a heel.

While he is unlikely to hop in the squared circle this year, Cena could make another appearance at Backlash next month.
