Jets Take Chance on $10 Million NFC Defender: Report

The New York Jets continue to add to their pass rush in free agency.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler revealed on social media that the Jets have signed Green Bay Packers defender Kingsley Enagbare to a one-year, $10 million deal.

He is listed at 6-foot-4 and weighs 258 pounds.

The Jets also came to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals EDGE Joseph Ossai to the tune of a three-year deal for $36 million.

Getting Into the Numbers

Enagbare, 26, originally entered the league as the No. 179 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He has spent his entire four-year career to date with the Packers.

During that period, Enagbare has appeared in 68 games and has made 21 starts. With those opportunities, he has collected 11.5 sacks, 31 quarterback hits, 146 total tackles, 25 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four pass deflections, and a fumble recovery.

He signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jets. That $10 million annual salary places him No. 35 among the highest-paid pass rushers in the NFL, per Over The Cap.

I spoke with Packers guru Joe Bartel over text after the signing was announced.

Bartel told me that Enagbare is a “terrific run defender. I truly think he’s one of the best edge run defenders in the league. He plays with a ton of heart and explosiveness. When you’re building a defensive line rotation, you just want one of these guys who never gives an inch against the run and can be a pass rusher in a pinch if need be.”

Top Social Media Reactions to Jets Landing Enagbare in Free Agency

NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY said he “reached out to a few defensive coaches” on the Jets’ latest addition, Enagbare, to get their thoughts.

“Enagabare described as ‘tough’ and ‘made of the right stuff.’ He’ll effort his way into plays, but he has some athletic limitations which can lead to missed plays,” Hughes revealed.

“Kingsley Enagbare and Joseph Ossai are two under-the-radar moves for the Jets to bolster their defensive line. By PFF standards, they are considered ‘average’ players. But there’s a blueprint that the sum of the parts is better than the whole. Both are good fits for the 3-4 scheme,” beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor responded.

Jets Defense Needs a Face Lift and They’re Getting It

There aren’t many teams in NFL history who rebuilt their entire team through free agency and found immediate success.

It happens occasionally, but not often.

When you’re a 3-14 team that is coming off one of the worst seasons in team history, sometimes you don’t have a choice.

Longtime NFL scout and current NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah bluntly said exactly that on social media.

“[The] Jets spending on defense like a team that was embarrassed (rightfully so) by last year’s performance,” Jeremiah wrote.

This will be a multifaceted approach. The Jets are aggressively attacking defense in free agency. However, that won’t be enough. The team will have to attack the NFL draft with the same intensity to fill out the rest of the holes.
