Jets Reportedly Hire Frank Reich as New Offensive Coordinator

The New York Jets have had an odd start to the offseason, to say the least. While head coach Aaron Glenn has held onto his role as the team’s head coach, he suddenly decided to completely gut his coaching staff, resulting in several noteworthy coaches being let go by the Jets.

Perhaps the most surprising of the bunch was offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. With reports emerging that Glenn wanted to hire Frank Reich as his new offensive coordinator, Engstrand was quickly kicked to the curb by the team. On Wednesday morning, though, Glenn got his guy, as New York officially hired Reich to be its new offensive coordinator.

Jets Hire Frank Reich to Be New Offensive Coordinator

It’s safe to say that Glenn’s first season in charge of the Jets was a complete mess. The offense never got off the ground, as it cycled through Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook as its starting quarterback. Defensively, New York was lifeless, as it became the first unit in NFL history to go a full season without recording a single interception.

While rumors swirled that Glenn could be on the hot seat, he’s managed to hold onto his job for the time being. His leash is practically nonexistent now, though, and he seems to believe that changing up his coaching staff was necessary. That led to him targeting Reich, even though he already had Engstrand in place as his offensive coordinator.

Reich most recently was the Carolina Panthers‘ head coach in the NFL, but his stint with the team went so poorly that he got fired midway through his only season with the team. After serving as the Stanford Cardinal’s interim head coach in 2025, Reich has found his way back to the pros, as he will join Glenn’s staff, with his experience as both an offensive coordinator and head coach clearly making him a highly-desired coach for Glenn.

“Source: the Jets are hiring former Panthers and Colts HC Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X. “Reich also was Stanford’s interim head coach last season, but now he returns to the NFL.”

Reich’s two stints as a head coach with the Panthers and Indianapolis Colts haven’t exactly gone well, but he has proven himself to be a successful offensive coordinator in previous stops with the San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. Now, he will be tasked with finding a way to make New York’s offense a unit that is actually capable of playing football in the NFL.

Considering the state of this group, that is going to be easier said than done, as the front office has a ton of work to do in order to get this unit back on track. Simply put, Reich is going to need more talent than what he currently has at his disposal if he’s going to have any sort of success in his new role with New York. Regardless, Glenn has his new offensive coordinator, but he’s going to need a lot to go his way if he’s going to have any more success than Engstrand.
