The New York Jets continue to do their homework on the top passers in the 2026 NFL draft.
ESPN’s Field Yates revealed on social media that the Jets are hosting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson for a private workout on Friday, March 27.
On Wednesday, March 25, Simpson participated in the Alabama Pro Day. Yates said, “Ty Simpson had a razor-sharp throwing session today. His accuracy and tempo stood out.”
The Jets Are Doing Their Due Diligence on This Year’s QB Crop
Over the last week, the Jets have had private workouts with Miami’s Carson Beck, Penn State’s Drew Allar, and now Simpson on Friday.
The Jets don’t have a long-term answer at the quarterback position and they’re desperate to find one.
Gang Green holds four picks inside the top-44 of this class:
- First round: No. 2 overall
- First round: No. 16 overall
- Second round: No. 33 overall
- Second round: No. 44 overall
However, the Jets also hold four premium picks in the 2027 NFL draft.
They have three first-round draft choices: the Indianapolis Colts, their own, and whatever pick ends up being better between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. Plus, they hold their own second-rounder in the 2027 NFL draft as well.
In other words, the Jets don’t have to force a QB pick this year if there isn’t someone they love in this draft class.
Emphatic Draft Stock Update From Insider
On the consensus big board, Simpson is ranked as the 35th overall best player. He is listed as the second-best QB in this class on the big board, only behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza.
“The one thing that I can say confidently right now in talking to front offices is I believe, and it’s not going out on a limb: Ty Simpson will be a first-round draft pick. A first-round draft pick. That is all I’m comfortable saying right now,” ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Will They Risk It?
Simpson, 23, is listed at 6-foot-1 and weighs 211 pounds.
He spent four years at Alabama, mostly riding the bench. This past season, he got his moment in the sun. Simpson was named second-team All-SEC for his accomplishments.
He completed 64.5% of his passes, threw for 3,567 passing yards, and had a 28 touchdown to five interception ratio.
Those are all fine accomplishments, but there is one massive red flag—a lack of experience.
Simpson has 15 career college starts.
“Since 2011, six of the seven first-round quarterbacks with fewer than 17 college starts didn’t pan out in the NFL: Jake Locker (12), Christian Ponder (12), Anthony Richardson Sr. (13), Mitchell Trubisky (13), Blaine Gabbert (13), and Dwayne Haskins (14). The lone exception was Cam Newton (14), the 2015 NFL MVP,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini sternly warned the Jets.
The Simpson Scouting Report
“Former five-star prospect who waited his turn at Alabama and raised his profile in a single season as the Tide’s starter. Simpson is mechanically sound from a footwork and release perspective, providing a favorable foundation to work from. He’s above average as a processor and decision-maker, but timing and anticipation remain works in progress. Arm talent and velocity are average, which limits his success,” NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote.
“One-year starters rarely ‘boom’ so he’ll need a patient staff and a clear developmental roadmap to fill in the missing pieces,” Zierlein added.
The problem for the Jets is that if they draft Simpson, they will have to determine if he is the right guy in 2026. If he doesn’t touch the field during his rookie season, that’ll be an impossible question to fully answer.
