1. Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s Parents Backed His Football Dreams From Day One
Smith-Njigba’s parents, Maada and Jami Smith-Njigba, raised their sons in Rockwall, Texas, where both boys fell in love with sports.
Maada played linebacker in college before becoming a firefighter with the Dallas Fire Department. He told Fox Sports in 2022 that his parenting strategy was simple.
“My goal was to tire them out so when we got home, all I had to do was feed them, bathe them and put them to sleep,” Maada said. “Then they started getting on teams and I was like, ‘Oh my god, these guys are good! They can play!’”
Jami said she fiercely protected her son as his profile grew.
“I’m defensive, I’m Mama Bearish,” she told WFAA in April 2023. “I’m making a list of people who will never have an interview for [Jaxon’s] entire career. I take it very personally.”
2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba Fell in Love With Football at Just 3 Years Old
Smith-Njigba told KING 5 News that his football journey started earlier than most.
“My first team — it was out of Terrell Texas. We were called the Broncos. I was 3 years old,” he said. “My brother was playing ball and I would run out there with no helmet… they were like, ‘OK, we’re gonna find you a team.’ Ever since, I was hooked.”
He added that football taught him more than just athletic skills.
“I feel like football prepares you for life,” Smith-Njigba said. “Being able to count on people, people being able to count on you — it’s a big thing.”
3. His Brother Canaan Took a Different Pro Sports Path
Jaxon’s older brother, Canaan Smith-Njigba, gravitated toward baseball and became a professional right fielder after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022.
Despite choosing different sports, the brothers pushed each other constantly.
“He’s my best friend,” Jaxon said. “I give him a lot of credit, just being the older brother going through the things that he’s gone through and me being able to see and adjust.”
When asked who wins in different sports, Smith-Njigba didn’t hesitate.
“Oh, me. 1,000%,” he said of basketball, while admitting baseball “is in the bag” for Canaan.
4. Jaxon Smith-Njigba Practiced Football in His Living Room
Jami recalled how her son turned their home into a personal training facility.
“He’d very much visualize a game in his head,” she told Fox Sports. “He would allow cushions to tackle him or chase him. If Canaan wasn’t playing, he’d throw the ball to himself and that was a catch.”
She said Jaxon also studied hours of game film.
“He does visualize first what he thinks is going to happen in a game,” Jami explained. “Then he plays that out in different scenarios.”
5. There Was Never a Backup Plan for His NFL Future
The family committed fully to Jaxon’s football path, hiring trainers and traveling nationwide for camps.
Jami told WFAA they often missed birthdays and family events.
“There was no Plan B,” she said.
That focus paid off. Smith-Njigba became a Texas high school and Ohio State standout before launching his NFL career — backed every step of the way by parents who believed early and never wavered.
