Jarren Duran Explains Inappropriate Gesture To Fan In Loss Vs. Twins

After making the postseason in 2025, the Boston Red Sox have started off the 2026 MLB season on the wrong foot. They currently sit tied for the worst record in baseball at 6-11, and last in the AL East.

The Red Sox started off the season 2-7, making it one of the worst in franchise history.

Their offense lacks consistency and struggles with runners in scoring position. Key players like Trevor Story, Roman Anthony, and Jarren Duran are batting a combined average of .201.

However, their struggles do end at the plate, aside from poor pitching, Jarren Duran has found himself in an uncomfortable situation involving an opposing team’s fan.

Jarren Duran Flips Off Minnesota Twins Fan After Triggering Comment Regarding Mental Health

On Jarren Duran’s trek back to the Red Sox dugout following a groundout, Duran was caught on  national broadcast flipping off someone in the crowd. However, in the video it is unclear what, or if anything, was said.

In a report from ESPN, Duran spoke about the incident after the game:

“Somebody just told me to kill myself,” Duran said. “I’m used to it at this point, you know? I mean, s— happens. I mean, I’m going to flip somebody off if they say something to me, but it is what it is. I shouldn’t react like that, but that kind of stuff is still kind of triggering.”

Duran has openly shared his past mental health struggles in a Red Sox documentary, and it is not the first time a fan has told Duran to ‘kill himself’. In 2025, only a few weeks after the team’s documentary aired, a Cleveland Guardians fan yelled at Duran and Red Sox personnel had to hold him back.

“Honestly, it’s my fault for talking about my mental health because I kind of brought in the haters. So I’ve just got to get used to it,” Duran said. “I was just trying to hold it in and not really bring that up to the team. I mean, we’re trying to win a game. I shouldn’t even bring that up to anybody. … It just happens.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora was an unaware of the incident during the game, but claims he will speak with Duran.

In 2024, Duran was suspended two games without pay after directing an anti-gay slur at a fan who was ‘trash-talking’ to Duran during his at-bat. The outfielder later issued an apology and donated $8,200 to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).

Jarren Duran Opened Up About Suicide Attempt In 2022

In 2025, the Boston Red Sox debuted a documentary on Netflix called, “The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox”. In the documentary, Durran opened up about his on-field struggles in 2021 and 2022 that pushed him to a dark place.

Durran grappled with his inability to meet his own expectations and felt like he was disappointing others. The outfielder revealed that his mental health took such a turn that he attempted to take his own life.

“I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a bullet and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened,” Duran said in the documentary. “So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off. I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason’, so that’s when I started to look myself in the mirror after the gun didn’t go off. I was like, ‘Do I want to be here, or do I not want to be here?’ That happened for a reason and obviously you’re here for a reason, so let’s be the way you want to be and play [the way] you want to play and live the way you want to live.”
