Jarred Vanderbilt Injury: Los Angeles Lakers Get Great News from JJ Redick

The Los Angeles Lakers appear to have avoided the worst-case scenario with Jarred Vanderbilt, though his availability remains uncertain after a painful finger injury in Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick said Vanderbilt is “day-to-day” with an injury to his non-shooting hand, according to Law Murray of The Athletic, who relayed Redick’s update on X. The update comes after Vanderbilt left the Lakers’ 108-90 loss to Oklahoma City in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

That matters for more than depth-chart bookkeeping. Vanderbilt is one of the Lakers’ most useful defensive options in a series that already looked difficult before Los Angeles added another injury concern. With Luka Doncic sidelined and the Thunder up 1-0, the Lakers’ margin for error is shrinking quickly.

Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick Says Jarred Vanderbilt is “Day-to-Day” After a Finger Injury

Vanderbilt suffered the injury in the second quarter while trying to contest a dunk attempt by Thunder big man Chet Holmgren. The forward hit his finger on the backboard and immediately left the game, according to the Associated Press.

Vanderbilt played just six minutes before exiting. He finished with two points, and the Lakers had to finish the night without one of their most disruptive defensive forwards.

Redick’s “day-to-day” label is the important part for Los Angeles. Initial reaction to the injury was grim because of how painful it looked in real time, but day-to-day status keeps open the possibility that Vanderbilt could return during the series.

That would be significant against Oklahoma City. The Thunder can pressure teams with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren, Jalen Williams and a deep supporting cast. Vanderbilt is not a high-usage offensive player, but his size, activity and defensive versatility give Redick another matchup option when the Lakers need to survive non-LeBron James stretches or change the look against Oklahoma City’s scorers.

Without him, Los Angeles has fewer ways to absorb foul trouble, protect the glass and keep bigger defensive lineups on the floor.

Jarred Vanderbilt Joined Luka Doncic On the Injured List

Vanderbilt’s injury adds to a bigger Lakers availability problem. Doncic remains out with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, and Redick previously said there was “no change” in his status for the Thunder series. Doncic has resumed light on-court work, but he was officially out for Game 1 and not viewed as close to an immediate return.

That leaves the Lakers leaning even more heavily on James, Austin Reaves and their available role players.

James delivered in Game 1, scoring 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting, but the Lakers still produced their lowest playoff point total since 2021. Oklahoma City also won the bench scoring battle 34-15, which underscored the depth gap between the teams.

Vanderbilt’s status matters in that context. He is not replacing Doncic’s scoring or playmaking, but he can help the Lakers win the possession game. Against a Thunder team that creates pressure on both ends, Los Angeles needs every extra rebound, deflection and defensive stop it can find.

If Vanderbilt cannot play in Game 2, Redick may have to stretch other defensive assignments and ask more from players who are already carrying larger offensive responsibilities.

Lakers-Thunder

The Lakers were competitive for much of Game 1, but Oklahoma City eventually pulled away for a 108-90 win. Holmgren led the Thunder with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell each scored 18. Oklahoma City shot nearly 50% from the field and over 43% from 3-point range.

The fourth quarter was where the game got away from Los Angeles. Oklahoma City’s depth showed up late, and the Lakers did not have enough offense beyond James to keep pace.

Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, at Paycom Center. The Thunder are listed as 15.5-point favorites, with the Lakers at +600 on the moneyline and Oklahoma City at -900, according to Covers. The total is listed at 209.5.

Those odds reflect the state of the series as much as the Game 1 score. Oklahoma City is at home, already leading 1-0 and facing a Lakers team dealing with major injury questions.

For the Lakers, the storylines are clear entering Game 2: Can James carry another heavy scoring burden? Can Reaves and the supporting cast give Los Angeles enough offense? Can the Lakers keep the Thunder out of transition and off the offensive glass? And now, can Vanderbilt get back on the floor quickly enough to help stabilize the defense?

Redick’s update gives the Lakers some hope. It does not erase the concern.

Los Angeles does not need Vanderbilt to be a star in this series. It needs him to be available, physical and disruptive. Against a Thunder team that already looks deeper and healthier, even that could matter.
