Jahmyr Gibbs Edges Closer to Historic Lions Deal After Major Contract Update

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs‘ contract negotiations are showing no signs of slowing down. Time is running out for the Lions, as their first pre-season game is only a week away, while the Indianapolis Colts fuelled the running back market this morning by making Jonathan Taylor the second most expensive RB in the league.

As Gibbs’ contract negotiations drag on, the latest update regarding the situation has some good news for Lions fans. The 24-year-old reportedly made meaningful progress in his contract talks, which could be up to three years, per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.

“Sources: The Lions and star RB Jahmyr Gibbs have made substantial progress on a 3-year contract extension that will make him the NFL’s highest-paid RB,” noted Schultz on X. “The hope is to get a deal done as early as today – and Gibbs will then return to practice.”

If the three-time Pro Bowler lands a record-breaking deal to become the most expensive RB in the league, his deal should surpass Bijan Robinson, who currently holds that spot. He signed a three-year contract for $22.25 million a year, whereas, after inking a $22 million a year contract, Colts’ Jonathan Taylor ended up falling just a little short. With the signings of two of the biggest deals of the running back market in NFL history, it could have a big reaction across the Lions camp.

Albert Breer Says Jahmyr Gibbs’ Contract Could Be the Next RB Domino to Fall

Besides Jordan Schultz, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer is present at the Lions camp today, giving a similar update on the star Pro Bowler. With Robinson and Taylor securing their respective contracts, Breer reported that it could have a domino effect on Gibbs’ contract situation, and the deal could be officially wrapped up soon.

“At @Lions today—and the team and star RB Jahmyr Gibbs are working on a new deal that’s expected to be finalized soon, I’m told,” Breer reported on X. “With Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Taylor signed over the last 48 hours, the third RB domino should fall.”

Gibbs has been on ‘hold in’ since the beginning of the training camp last week with a demand to sign a contract extension before taking part in the physical drills. Despite his prolonged absence from the training camp, he has finally returned to practice this morning, making it clear that both sides are getting closer to a deal sooner rather than later.
