Insider Suggests Potential Return for Giants in Kayvon Thibodeaux Trade

The New York Giants are managing a trade request for Dexter Lawrence while also working to deal another player on their front four.

The trade market for Kayvon Thibodeaux is crystalizing, and NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported the Giants are likely to deal him if they can get a third-round pick.

Thibodeaux, who the Giants picked fifth overall at the 2022 NFL Draft, is set to enter his fifth-year option season and is coming off a career-worst year in 2025. The EDGE rusher dealt with injuries and posted just 2.5 sacks and 25 tackles in 10 games, each of which was a career worst.

The Giants are sitting on pick No. 5 in this year’s draft and are reportedly interested in choosing Sonny Styles from Ohio State, who would be their third pass rusher selected in the first round for the past five drafts.

Still, acquiring a Day 2 draft pick would be enough for the Giants to act, according to an unnamed team exec.

“I think Thibodeaux is gone if they can get a third for him,” a longtime NFL executive told La Canfora for Sports Boom. “That’s a guess, but it’s a deep edge class.”

The Giants have been linked to running back Jeremiyah Love and safety Caleb Downs at No. 5. Still, if they pass on Styles, first-year head coach John Harbaugh could still be inclined to select Thibodeaux’s replacement later in the draft — especially since Thibodeaux has fallen off from the player who had 50 tackles and 11.5 sacks in 2023.

“If [Harbaugh] likes what’s still on the board after Day 2, maybe he just takes a [fourth-round pick],” one exec told La Canfora. “He’s not the guy who took Thibodeaux at five, remember.”

Whatever the case, rival GMs are expecting the Giants to move on.

“Thibodeaux has been the center of trade rumors for years and there is a strong expectation among rival general managers that he will be gone by the second day of the NFL draft, if not sooner,” La Canfora wrote.

The Lawrence trade rumors threaten to further dent the Giants’ talent pool. Though some have called a trade for the three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman ‘unlikely,’ La Canfora explained why the Giants’ mindset is changing.

“The Giants may not be willing to embrace that much change to a front seven that was supposed to be the strength of the franchise,” La Canfora reported. “But some change appears inevitable now.”

Still, Harbaugh is hellbent on putting his own program together and trying to weed out the unsuccessful selections made by the previous regime. With that in mind, La Canfora cited a source that spelled out the truckload of assets and salary-cap flexibility New York could end up with by dealing both players.

“If I were the Giants in Year 1 of a new program I would be tempted to move both [Lawrence and Thibodeaux] in separate deals for [the equivalent of a first-round pick on the trade chart], two threes and a useful player or two,” an unidentified exec told La Canfora, “and save roughly $28M in cap room this year and next year and about $35M and $21M in cash.”
