The Detroit Pistons have been active this offseason, but much of the chatter surrounding this team has involved All-NBA center Jalen Duren. A restricted free agent, Duren is still on the open market waiting to receive a massive contract extension from the Pistons. To this point, though, the team has been unwilling to meet his demands.
While another team could hand Duren an offer sheet and force Detroit to either match it or let him walk, that has never seemed increasingly likely to happen. Instead, the two sides are stuck in a standoff, and according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Pistons’ view of Duren could lead to this situation dragging on for several more weeks.
Pistons Don’t View Jalen Duren as a Max Contract Player
Restricted free agency is a tough place to find yourself in the NBA, and Duren is finding that out the hard way. The No. 13 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft just put together the best season of his young career (19.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1 APG, 65 FG%), as he earned his first All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team.
The main issue with Duren right now is that he was awful during Detroit’s playoff run this year (10.2 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.1 APG, 51.4 FG%). For much of the season, Duren was the Pistons’ second-best player behind Cade Cunningham, but in the postseason, he was a shell of himself. He’s still only 22 years old, but the front office seems reluctant to invest an inordinate amount of money in Duren out of fear he will burn them down the line.
There is a big gap between how Duren values himself and how Detroit values him. All reports have indicated Duren believes he’s a max contract player, but the Pistons, after watching him in the playoffs, don’t see things the same way, according to Siegel. With the two sides struggling to find common ground, it could be another couple of weeks, or even months, until there’s a resolution here.
“There’s been zero progress,” Siegel said on “Clutch Scoops.” “They don’t view him as a max-level guy … and that’s why the situation is going to continue to drag on. It’s gonna go on to late August, possibly early September, maybe even late September, and then past training camp … I’ve heard nothing about sign-and-trades; the Pistons are not interested in that. And everybody I talk to says Jalen Duren is not going to be taking the qualifying offer.”

Detroit has reason to be concerned about Duren’s playoff performance, and since he’s a restricted free agent, it isn’t really in a rush to resolve this situation. At some point, the two sides will try to mend fences, but it’s a staring contest right now, with Duren and the Pistons waiting for each other to blink first.
Duren’s contract drama has hovered over the team all offseason long, and it’s made it difficult for the front office to pursue upgrades elsewhere, knowing it could take on another huge contract in the near future. It’s tough to see Duren playing for another team next season right now, but the longer this situation drags on, the more likely that possibility becomes.
