Indiana Pacers Star Tyrese Haliburton Shares Concerning Shingles Recovery Update

Back in February, the Indiana Pacers announced that Tyrese Haliburton was diagnosed with shingles amid his recovery from a torn right Achilles tendon.

Haliburton took some time away from the team to deal with the painful illness, as reported by ESPN. Its main symptom is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox.

The two-time NBA All-Star was back on the road with the team after three weeks.

Speaking to reporters on Monday morning for his season exit interview, Haliburton was asked about his recovery from his torn Achilles and shingles.

Haliburton mentioned that he continues to play 5-on-5, which was the same news he announced last week. But as for his shingles, he still has a long way to go since it affected his face, which is why he regularly wears glasses to stop himself from scratching.

“I’ve had good days and bad days,” Haliburton said. “But for most parts, it’s bad days. It hasn’t been any fun. I’m still dealing with it. I’ve been taking unbelievable amounts of medications to try and get rid of it. It hasn’t worked. It has caused me to gain weight and look a little bigger, so that’s been a topic of conversation on social media and stuff, but what can you do?”

Haliburton added that he’s been experiencing nerve pain, which is not pleasant at all. He’s hoping that it will go away pretty soon, but there’s really no clear timeline for when his shingles will clear up.

Being Ready for the Season

Despite the tough news about his shingles, Haliburton feels pretty confident about being ready for next season. He couldn’t wait to get off his current medication so he could start losing weight and get into shape.

“Once I get off that and start running a little more, I have no worries,” Haliburton said. “I got a long summer ahead of me. We’re only in April, and season doesn’t start until October. I don’t have any real concerns.”

The Pacers took an early vacation this season without their best player. They finished with a record of 19-63, which is the second-worst in the NBA. They have a shot at getting the number one pick in this year’s draft, though a top four pick would not be bad at all due to how deep the class is.

Haliburton Makes Promise to Pacers Fans

Before the Pacers’ 133-121 loss to the Detroit Pistons in their regular-season finale on Sunday, Haliburton addressed the crowd. He made a promise for next season.

“Thank you guys for a great year,” Haliburton said, via Sports Illustrated. “You all have been awesome. I know it’s been a long year, but we appreciate you guys showing up. You guys have been the best fans in the world. And don’t get used to the Pacers not playing in April, May and June. Go Pacers! Appreciate y’all.”

The Pacers will have a stacked team next season if they are healthy, with Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, Ivica Zubac and whoever their 2026 first-round pick will be.
