Howie Roseman Admits He Thinks About Missed Draft Picks ‘Every Day’

Howie Roseman is the consensus best executive in the NFL. But even he isn’t perfect.

The Philadelphia Eagles executive vice president and general manager opened up about how he is still haunted by his missed draft picks while addressing reporters ahead of next weekend’s draft in Pittsburgh.

Roseman has a near-flawless record with trades and has found a way to get incomprehensible value with his draft picks. Of course, the Eagles traded up to select Nolan Smith with the 30th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, a selection that was a catalyst for their Super Bowl LIX championship.

Howie Roseman Thinks of Draft Misses ‘Every Day’

Executives, like cornerbacks and goldfish, need to have short memories.

But Roseman evidently doesn’t subscribe to that theory.

“I think about the first-round picks that I’ve missed on every day if I’m being honest with myself,” Roseman said. “I can’t go back and change the past. I’m very comfortable knowing, as much as I try, I’m not going to be perfect. But I’m going to try to be as perfect as I can be.”

Roseman surely thinks about Jalen Reagor, a first-rounder in the 2020 NFL Draft, who spent just two years in Philly. He may think about 2019 second-round pick J.J. Arcega- Whiteside, who finished his career with just 16 catches for 290 yards and has not played since 2021.

Still, Roseman is committed to learning from his mistakes. He spoke about how he can do so by properly vetting players before choosing them on draft night.

“When I think about those picks, and I think about the reasons I missed on those picks, sometimes I even overcompensate,” Roseman said. “If you’re bringing me somebody that may look like one of those guys, I’m going to be asking a lot of questions and I’m going to be skeptical in my own report on those guys.”

Those missed picks also helped him improve and become the executive he is now.

“They’ve also helped me get even better at my job,” Roseman said. “I think if it wasn’t for those mistakes, I think a lot of the successful picks may not have happened.”

Howie Roseman Would Not Give an Update on Nolan Smith, Jalen Carter’s Options

Smith and Jalen Carter are both eligible to have their fifth-year options picked up, and the Eagles are facing a May 1 deadline to announce whether their 2023 first-round picks will have contracts for 2027.

But Roseman wasn’t ready to announce any decisions just yet.

“Obviously [they are] really important players for us,” Roseman said. “But [I] would probably keep [that information] in house until we make a decision on those two.”

Carter, the ninth overall pick in 2023, has already been a two-time Pro Bowl player and has 13.5 sacks and 108 tackles in three seasons. Smith has 10.5 sacks in three years and had 16 tackles and an NFL-high four sacks in the Eagles’ championship run in 2024.

Still, both Carter and Smith are in line for huge raises, and Roseman has kept the Eagles’ window to win open by making shrewd financial decisions.
