High winds cause hundreds of DIA flight delays, cancellations

Airlines at Denver International Airport delayed or canceled hundreds of flights on Tuesday as strong, gusty winds swept across Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Plains.

Departing flights at DIA were delayed by 30 minutes on average because of the wind, the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday afternoon.

There were 270 flight delays and 23 canceled flights as of 2:42 p.m., according to data from the flight tracking website FlightAware.

SkyWest reported 88 delays, United Airlines had 75 delayed and 10 canceled flights; and Southwest Airlines had 64 delayed and six canceled flights.

National Weather Service sensors logged sustained winds of as high as 37 mph and gusts up to 47 mph on Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters issued a red flag warning for the Front Range and Eastern Plains because of critical fire weather, including high winds and low humidity.
