High school roundup: San Ramon Valley wins thriller, Serra and Valley Christian dominate, El Cerrito pulls off upset

No. 9 San Ramon Valley 13,  Livermore 9: The Wolves overcame a seven-run deficit in the first inning to earn its first league win. 

Hayden Maas’ RBI double in the first gave Livermore a 7-0 lead, but SRV slowly got back into game as the innings went on.

Max Ellis scored the tying run when Jake Hensley’s single found the gap in center field in the sixth inning. The Wolves went on to score two more runs and took a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth. 

Livermore (6-3, 0-2 EBAL) came back to tie in the sixth when Mateo Bullis brought in two runs to even the game.

But a four-run burst in the eighth inning sealed the game for SRV (3-4, 1-1).

SRV senior Joseph Coupland had two hits, a double and a home run. Colin Linteo added five RBIs and three doubles. 

Bullis and Maas each had two RBIs for Livermore. 

No. 3 St. Ignatius 5, No. 8 Bellarmine 4: It wasn’t easy, but the Wildcats got it done. 

Down 4-2 in the eighth inning, the pressure was on St. Ignatius to mount a comeback. St. Ignatius got the tying run when Emmett Johnson hit a single to right field that brought home AJ Wineinger

In the ninth, Wineinger scored the winning single that got Dominic Camarillo across home plate to seal the win in extra innings for the St. Ignatius. 

The Wildcats avenged the 3-0 loss they had to Bellarmine earlier in the week. 

St. Ignatius sophomore pitcher Chase Gordon pitched five innings and struck out two while allowing a run. Rocco Giometti had four hits on five attempts with a double.

Senior Ryan Bays had two hits in four at-bats with an RBI and two doubles for Bellarmine.

No. 10 St. Francis 7, No. 11 Archbishop Mitty 7: The battle between the two league rivals ended in a stalemate. 

Mitty had a four-run lead after the fourth inning, but the Lancers mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. Roman Trinidad, Mack Mrowka and Luke DeVine all brought in runs for St. Francis in the sixth inning to tie the game at seven. 

The Lancers’ defense closed out the seventh inning strong to end the game in a tie. 

Grayson Munoz recorded a hit and two RBIs for the Monarchs. Luka Pintar also had a hit and two RBIs.

Jedd Chang had two hits and a home run for St. Francis.

Mitty is now 6-2-1, 1-0-1. St. Francis is 3-4-1, 0-1-1.

No. 2 Valley Christian 9, Archbishop Riordan 2: Valley Christian continued its hot streak with a dominant performance over Riordan.

The Warriors took a 7-0 lead after the fifth inning and didn’t let up. 

Senior Tatum Marsh had three RBIs and two hits while Kole Laubach had three RBIs for Valley Chrisitan. 

Jacob Dubriwny and Chase Oliver were the only two Crusaders to score a run, each coming in the sixth inning. 

Valley Christian is undefeated at 8-0, 2-0. Riordan dropped to 3-5-2, 0-2.

Irvington 7, Antioch 6: Despite a valiant effort from the Panthers that saw them get within a run in the seventh inning, Irvington held on to capture its first win of the season. 

The Vikings did all their damage in the first inning, scoring all seven runs out the gate.

Senior Ryan Johnson had three hits and an RBI. Junior Brayden Jaksa hit a solo home run. 

Antioch senior Kenyon Sanders batted 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. The Panthers dropped to 4-2. 

No. 19 Capuchino 5, Mountain View 4: After going down two runs early, Capuchino rallied and won on a walk-off for its eighth victory in nine games. 

Nathan Balch had the walk-off hit. Balch hit a pop fly to first base, but the ball was dropped and Joseph Tressitte scored the winning run. 

Capuchino pitcher Declan Mendel came in as a reliever in the fourth inning, striking out three batters and allowing a hit in 2 1-3 innings. 

Liam Barrett had two hits and an RBI for Mountain View. 

Capuchino improved to 9-2 while Mountain View dropped to 3-5. 

El Cerrito 7, No. 13 Berkeley 6: The Yellow Jackets late-game comeback fell just short as El Cerrito held on to get the upset win. 

Berkeley (4-2) scored three runs in the first inning, but El Cerrito’s bats stayed consistent in the middle innings. Max Garcia’s RBI single brought home two runners and gave El Cerrito (3-0) a 7-3 lead at the top of the sixth inning. 

Berkeley responded later in the inning, cutting the deficit to just a run when Jackson Ehrlich’s single scored Isaiah Mays.

Garcia came in clutch in the seventh, retiring one and striking out two batters to deny Berkeley the comeback victory. 

No. 20 Amador Valley 16, Dougherty Valley 0: After a hard loss to De La Salle on Wednesday, the Dons responded in dominant fashion as they shutout Dougherty Valley at home.

Jason Alonso, Elliot de la Torre and Paul Chen combined to strike out seven batters and allowed just four hits across seven innings. 

Amador (5-3, 1-1 East Bay Athletic League) scored 13 runs in the first three innings to put the game out of reach early. Senior Evan Berry had three hits in four attempts to go along with five RBIs and two doubles. Aaron Solomon and Gavin Colombo each had three RBIs. 

Softball

No. 1 St. Francis 5, No. 13 Capuchino 0: Senior Kate Munnerlyn threw a shutout, striking out 14 batters and allowing two hits to lead the Lancers to a five-run victory over Capuchino. 

The Texas A&M commit threw an immaculate inning in the fourth as she struck out three batters on nine pitches. 

St. Francis Junior Ava Bulanti had two hits and three RBIs. Munnerlyn did it on the offensive end too as she recorded two hits, two RBIs and a double. 

St. Francis is undefeated at 5-0. Capuchino is now 1-2.

Gilroy 6, Leigh 5: Gilroy beat Leigh in dramatic fashion, overcoming a five-run deficit in the final inning. 

Camryn Manning-Alarcon’s RBI single in the fifth inning gave the Longhorns a comfortable 5-0 lead. Heading into the seventh, the Mustangs needed to score six runs to win the game. 

And they did just that. 

Andrea Alvarez scored the tying run after Adi Hulbert hit a line drive single to center field. Averi Peters hit the walk-off single up the middle that brought home Ariela Yslava from third as Gilroy pulled off an unlikely win. 

Friday’s victory makes the Mustangs 7-3, 2-0. Leigh fell to 4-3, 0-1. 

Leland 5, No. 8 Branham 0: Leland pulled off the upset, blanking Branham at home. 

The Chargers scored three runs in the first inning and two runs in the fourth while playing excellent defense throughout the game.

Leland senior Megan Lamy pitched a shutout, striking out four batters and allowing just five hits in seven innings. Freshman Katelyn Vega had two hits, a double and an RBI.  

Leland improved to 7-2, 2-0 while Branham dropped to 7-5, 0-2. 

Carondelet 18, Las Lomas 0: It was pure domination from the Cougars as they shut out Las Lomas on the road in five innings.

Carondelet junior Maia Scholtens pitched a shutout, striking out 10 batters and allowing one hit. Karlina Meyer had two hits — a triple and a home run. Sydnie DeMartini batted 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a home run. 

Carondelet improved to 3-1, 1-0. Las Lomas dropped to 3-2, 1-0. 

Santa Teresa 10, Westmont 0: Santa Teresa pitcher Mariah Avalos pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight batters as the Saints beat Westmont in five innings. 

Santa Teresa (5-2, 2-0 Blossom Valley Mt. Hamilton) took an 8-0 lead after the eighth inning. Avalos’ dominance on the mound shut down the Westmont (1-8, 0-2) offense. 

Senior Haley Saole batted 3 for 3 with an RBI and a triple while junior Samantha Vidal had three hits for Santa Teresa.

Bishop O’Dowd 7, Redwood 5: It was a back-and-forth game with many twists and turns, but the Dragons came out on top in extra innings to get a gusty road win. 

Down 3-1 heading into the fourth inning, O’Dowd briefly took a 4-3 lead at the top of the seventh before Redwood scored the tying run to push the game to extra innings. 

The Dragons took a 7-4 lead in the eighth when Blake Kellermann scored on a wild pitch. Dragons pitcher Hanalei Strub, who pitched all eight innings, allowed a run in the bottom half of the eighth but retired three straight batters to seal the win for O’Dowd. 

Junior Morgan Jackson had two hits, a double and an RBI for O’Dowd. 

The Dragons improved to 6-3.

King’s Academy 13, Burlingame 0: King’s Academy put on a pitching clinic in its win over Burlingame in five innings. 

Sophomore Katia Nesper struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in five innings pitched. Senior Bella Bliss relieved Nesper in the fifth inning and didn’t allow a hit and walked a batter. 

King’s Academy junior Izzy Barrera batted 2 for 3 and had four RBIs.

The Knights are on an eight-game winning streak and are 10-1. Burlingame dropped to 4-3. 

Mt. Eden 17, Berkeley 5: Six Mt. Eden players had at least two RBIs as the Monarchs blew out Berkeley on the road.

Jasmine Cruz, Kealani Temoche, Daniella Montes, Andrea Toledo, Milania Hernandez and Amaris Ruiz each had two RBIs for Mt. Eden (6-1, 1-1 West Alameda County Shoreline). The Monarchs scored 10 runs in the last two innings to seal the win. 

Elisa Highton had two hits and an RBI for Berkeley (3-3, 1-1).
