High school roundup: Los Altos and Dougherty Valley pull off upsets, De La Salle and Menlo-Atherton cruise

BASEBALL

Los Altos 3, Palo Alto 2

Los Altos rallied from a two-run deficit to shock visiting Palo Alto on Wednesday night. Channing Hautop’s ground ball to second base drove Kai MacQuiddy in for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

MacQuiddy, who was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, also pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to help Los Altos get just its second win of the season, the team improving to 2-6. 

Palo Alto’s MLB prospect Charlie Bates drove in an RBI to put Palo Alto up 2-0 in the top of the third. But Emmett Heath and Darrion Wesley each drove in one run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. 

Palo Alto dropped to 2-3 on the season. 

Dougherty Valley 3, Livermore 1

Dougherty Valley earned an upset victory against EBAL opponent Livermore by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and an insurance run in the fifth inning.

John Wong drove in two RBI and fellow Dougherty senior Jayden Rouse drove in the other. Dougherty Valley’s Ahdil Khan pitched a complete game, striking out none but allowing no earned runs. Adam DeOcampo had two hits for DV, which improved to 2-5. Livermore dropped to 6-2. 

Los Gatos 12, Menlo-Atherton 3

Los Gatos used an eight-run third inning to bury Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday night. Four errors by Bears fielders didn’t help the visitors either as the Wildcats piled up runs.

Donovan Freed drove in three runs and hit a double for Los Gatos, and left fielder AJ Ljepava was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and another pair driven in.

Carter Johnstone, Zach Biller and Santino Nanez each had two RBI for Los Gatos, which improved to 6-1. Ethan Williams, a sophomore, went five innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run as the Wildcats starter.

Menlo-Atherton junior David Lopez was 2 for 3 as the only M-A player to record more than one hit. Adam Chane, Shawn Pagee and Will Roberts each drove in a run for the Bears (4-4).

De La Salle 6, Amador Valley 2

De La Salle rallied from an early one-run deficit to take down host Amador Valley in an East Bay Athletic League showdown. The Spartans scored four runs in the third inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Ace RJ Meyn pitched six innings of relief for the Concord program and allowed just one hit and one earned run while striking out five. De La Salle surrendered only two hits all game. 

 Slugger Hank Tripaldi was 1 for 3 with two RBI, and juniors Antonio Castro and Ethan Sullivan each went 2 for 3 at the plate. 

Amador Valley senior Evan Berry and junior Gavin Colombo each had an RBI for the hosts. Aaron Solomon and Berry each had a hit for the Dons.

De La Salle, which improved to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in league. The Spartans will face Granada on Friday, while Amador (4-3, 0-1) will play host to Dougherty Valley. 

Pittsburg 8, Irvington 1

Paul Salazar drove in two runs as Pittsburg routed Irvington in a non-league matchup despite only having three hits as a team. Nine Irvington errors certainly helped the Pirates cause. Desmond Toomer struck out four in six innings for Pittsburg. Ayush Sadekar had a hit and scored Irvington’s only run. 

Prospect 6, Oak Grove 1

Prospect senior Blake Quinonez hit a home run and drove in two RBI as the Panther cruised past Oak Grove. Pitcher Kyle Pollace did a little bit of everything for the Saratoga school, pitching four innings with five strikeouts and also stealing two bases. Oak Grove senior Jameson Rios hit a double.

Carlmont 5, Sacred Heart Prep 2

Carlmont senior Joseph Prieto was 2 for 4 with an RBI as the Scots took down Sacred Heart Prep without an extra-base hit. Tyler Webster drove in two Scots runs and pitcher Henry Massey pitched a complete game and allowed just two hits. Rallin Covey was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Sacred Heart Prep. Carlmont improved to 5-3, and SHP dropped to 4-5. 

The King’s Academy 1, Hillsdale 0 (Extra Innings)

Aiden Rhee broke a scoreless deadlock in the top of the eighth inning when he doubled in Toby Trotter. That was the only run TKA needed to come away with the eight-inning victory. 

Niko Orozco, Thomas Castro and Anthony White combined to allow just three hits for TKA (5-3-1). After Hillsdale’s starter struck out nine, senior Ethan Belloni went four innings and struck out four. 

SOFTBALL

Gilroy 4, Willow Glen 2

Gilroy scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Mustangs overcame an incredible pitching performance by Willow Glen sophomore Alanna Clincy. The Rams’ righthander had 18 strikeouts in a complete game. 

Ariela Yslava smacked a solo home run to lead off the inning, and Andrea Alvarez drove in Gilroy’s other RBI. In between, the Mustangs scored a run off a Willow Glen error. 

Willow Glen dropped to 0-3, while Gilroy improved to 6-3. 

Castro Valley 11, Mt. Eden 0

Castro Valley scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Trojans handed Mt. Eden its first loss of the season. Alyssa Green and Alicya Robertson each had three hits for Castro Valley, which had 16 knocks as a team.

Giselle De Casas had a team-high three RBI for the visitors, and Jaidyn Torres and Jayla Morales each had two RBI as well.  Jesymae Olympia pitched five scoreless innings for the winners, which improved to 3-2. Freshman Kealani Temoche was a bright spot for Mt. Eden and had two hits. Mt. Eden dropped to 5-1.

Leland 10, Live Oak 8

Two Santa Clara County schools duked it out in a back-and-forth, high-scoring thriller. Live Oak scored four in the top of the first, but Leland scored six over the next three innings. Then each team scored two apiece in the fifth inning. 

Leland made it a four-run lead with another pair of runs in the sixth, but Live Oak made things interesting by scoring two in the top of the seventh, and by popping out with the tying run at the plate to end the game. 

 Leland senior Hannah Ames hit two home runs and drove in five RBI to lead the Chargers. Teammate Irene Kim also went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Live Oak sophomore Ava Chapman hit a home run and had three RBI in the losing effort.
