Hayward man stabs wife to death, turns himself in to police

A 66-year-old Hayward man who allegedly stabbed his wife to death Thursday night has turned himself into police.

Around 5:45 pm, after receiving a call about a woman yelling inside an apartment, officers responded to the 25000 block of Cyprus Avenue, near the Safeway on Jackson Street in the city’s Jackson Triangle neighborhood.

Inside, they found an unresponsive woman, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a news release.

Witnesses told police that as officers arrived, they saw a man walking out of the house and leaving the area in a vehicle.

Just a few hours later, a.man contacted police to say he was involved. The man, 66-year-old Gary Barroga Garcia, was taken into custody for murder. The victim was his wife, who he lived with in Hayward.

The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call 510-293-7176.

This is Hayward’s second homicide of 2024.
