The Goodman Theatre, which celebrated its centennial this past season, topped the list of nominations for the 2026 Equity Jeffs, which were announced Wednesday. The 58th annual award show celebrates excellence in Chicago theater, with its equity awards focusing on the largest playhouses in the city.
The Goodman nabbed 24 nominations across six productions, including six for its world premiere English stage adaptation, “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” and five for “Covenant,” the spooky religious play penned by Chicago native York Walker.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Paramount Theatre also landed at the top of the list with each company garnering 20 nominations.
Chicago Shakespeare had five of its noms coming in partnership with other companies, including last year’s jump-scare-inducing Halloween hit “Paranormal Activity,” which is up for five awards. Aurora’s Paramount Theatre’s production of the holiday classic “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” is up for seven awards, tied with A Red Orchid’s scathing two-hander “Birds of North America” (which will be remounted this fall) for the most nominations for an individual show.
Timeline Theatre, which recently opened its new venue in Uptown, received six nominations, with three for the drama “An Enemy of the People,” the inaugural performance in its new space, which included best production.
In celebration of new work, eight world premiere productions are nominated for awards. This includes Steppenwolf’s “Windfall” by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, Chicago Shakespeare’s “Billie Jean” by Lauren Gunderson and A Red Orchid’s “The Targeted” by Hanna Kime.
Earlier this year, the Jeff Committee made headlines when it announced its non-equity awards would be paused. The non-equity awards, which are run independently of the equity awards, faced immediate backlash from the theater community when the committee of judges honored Invictus Theatre’s artistic director Charles Askenaizer as best director. Askenaizer is under investigation by the theater company’s board after recent allegations of abuse surfaced on social media from actors.
The winners for the Equity Jeff Awards will be announced during an awards ceremony held at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park on Sept. 14.
