If the Golden State Warriors fail to make the playoffs this season, they are heading into the lottery. The Warriors’ championship window might be shut already in the final years of Steph Curry‘s career, but a new conspiracy by Bill Simmons could potentially reopen it.
The Warriors have clinched a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. They are likely to finish 10th in the West, so they would need to win two games to earn the No. 8 spot in the postseason.
And what’s waiting for the No. 8 team? The defending NBA champions, Oklahoma City Thunder. They are expected to finish the campaign with the best record in the league, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as the MVP favorite.
Simmons’ Conspiracy Has NBA Gifting Warriors With Top 4 Pick
On the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons received emails from fans who shared their thoughts and suggestions about the NBA. One fan believes that the Warriors are going to win this year’s lottery due to a variety of reasons.
The first reason is that NBA commissioner Adam Silver will punish tanking teams and give the first pick to Golden State. The second reason is that the league doesn’t want to waste Curry’s final years and keep Golden State relevant for years to come.
Simmons loved the idea of the NBA possibly rigging the lottery and giving it to the Warriors. He opined that the No. 1 pick will be too obvious, so a Top 4 pick is a more likely scenario.
“I love this. Golden State, if they lose the first play-in game, they would have a 2.0% chance for number one, and they would have a 9.4% chance for the top four,” Simmons said. “A top four is one in 11 odds, basically, which is realistic.”
Simmons also provided other conspiracy theories for other teams, like the Dallas Mavericks getting another No. 1 pick to further correct the Luka Doncic trade. Another one is to give it to the Portland Trail Blazers to convince the new owner to vote in favor of the new Seattle expansion team.
Who Could Golden State Pick in the Top 4?
The 2026 NBA Draft Class is loaded with talent, so if the Warriors did get a Top 4 pick, they have plenty of options.
There is no consensus top pick at the moment, but the projected Top 5 players in the class are AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson and Darius Acuff Jr., as per Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin O’Connor.
Dybantsa led the nation in scoring, so he’s a prime candidate due to his potential, size and athleticism. Peterson can create his own shots, but there are questions about his health and athleticism.
Boozer is not known for his athleticism, though he can do it all for a power forward. He might need some time to improve his defense, but the talent is there for the Duke product.
Wilson, on the other hand, is quite possibly the most athletic player in the draft, but there are questions about his shooting. And as for Acuff, he’s an explosive scorer for size and is a respectable playmaker.
