On April 30th, the New York Giants announced that wide receiver Darius Slayton underwent surgery to address an injury to his core. While he’s expected to spend the coming months on the sidelines, the front office isn’t expected to make any rash decisions regarding his future with the franchise.
While interacting with fans on X/Twitter, Giants reporter Ryan Dunleavy was asked if the team would part with Slayton in an effort to save money. He quickly downplayed this notion, revealing that it won’t do much to their cap space as they enter the 2026 campaign.
Dunleavy also expressed a vote of confidence that Slayton will be a key piece for the Giants’ offense when he is able to return to action.
Slayton is a homegrown talent for the Giants, having been with the franchise since being a fifth-round pick in 2019. The 29-year-old is coming off a 2025 season where he notched 538 receiving yards and one touchdown across 14 appearances.
As one of the more established players in the Giants’ offense, Slayton will look to provide on-field production and veteran leadership when he gets back to 100%.
When Will Giants WR Darius Slayton be Back in Action?
Aside from the minimal financial impact, there is another factor as to why it’s unlikely the Giants will cut Slayton. That being his current recovery timeline. According to John Flanigan of SNY, the veteran wideout is on track to be back in the fold by the time training camp rolls around later this summer.
“Darius Slayton recently underwent surgery on a core muscle injury and he will miss the spring as he continues recovering, according to multiple reports,” wrote Flanigan. “Slayton is expected to be back in the mix as a full-go when training camp rolls around.”
Slayton coming back by the start of camp is good for both him and the Giants. This gives him ample time to get the much-needed reps ahead of the regular season, and the team could have a fully healthy offensive unit as they look to take a step forward in 2026.
Giants Rookie Could Secure Larger Role Amid Darius Slayton’s Absence
With Slayton sidelined for the foreseeable future, other members on the roster have an opportunity to showcase their talents. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, one new prospect is believed to climb up the depth chart following this injury news.
In a recent mailbag for SNY, Giants insider Connor Hughes provided some insights to New York’s receiver corps. On the topic of Slayton, he noted that one coach thinks Malachi Fields will soon leap in and become a key component of the Giants’ offense.
“One offensive coach I touched base with was a huge fan of his, saying he believed it wouldn’t be long before he unseated Darius Slayton as one of the Giants’ top pass catchers,” Hughes wrote.
“He’s more versatile than him,” he said. “Slayton isn’t as complete as he is.”
Following their pair of top ten picks, the Giants pulled off a trade in the third round to add Fields to their young core. It appears people within the organization are already high on the Notre Dame standout, and now he has a chance to quickly become an impactful piece for his new team.
