The 2026 NFL Draft ended up being a success for the New York Giants, as they were able to address multiple areas of need on the roster. As they get ready to join the fray, one new prospect touched on sharing the field with the franchise’s cornerstone talent.
During the third round, the Giants moved up to the 74th overall pick by trading future draft capital to the Cleveland Browns. With the selection, New York settled on wide receiver Malachi Fields out of Notre Dame.
While speaking with the media after being drafted, Fields was asked about Giants QB Jaxson Dart. He is a fan of the former first-round pick and is eager to get to work with him.
“Heard a little bit about him,” Fields told reporters. “I got to see him ball out last year, seeing him at Ole Miss. I’m excited to compete with that dude.”
Fields was a standout for Notre Dame last season, racking up 630 yards and five touchdowns across 12 appearances. He now joins a Giants offense that is headlined by Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo, and newly-signed Isaiah Likely.
Giants Coach Believes Malachi Fields Can be a Strong Complement for Jaxson Dart
This season, the Giants are ushering in a new era in a variety of ways. Along with bringing in a new head coach in John Harbaugh, this will also be Dart’s first full season as New York’s starter under center.
Amid the early rounds of the draft, the Giants were applauded for their efforts to make selections with Dart in mind. During a press conference after the second and third rounds, Harbaugh gave his thoughts on how Fields can help elevate Dart in year two.
“I feel really good about it. I feel very strongly that we did,” Harbaugh said of helping Dart via the draft. “To get Malachi (Fields) was a big plus. You saw him here for the pictures and things like that. You saw he’s a good-looking athlete, right, and good person. Another very determined guy. I would say that was a major priority.”
Malachi Fields Striving to aid Multiple Members of the Giants’ Offense
Standing at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Fields provides the Giants with some size and physicality at wide receiver. He’s spent years modeling his game after receivers of a similar stature and is hoping he can utilize his abilities to help multiple players he’ll be sharing the field with.
Given his larger frame, Fields is capable of holding his own in one-on-one situations offensively. He thinks this part of his game will come in handy with New York, mainly when defenses are sending multiple bodies at Nabers and Dart needs to adjust on the fly.
“I believe so,” Fields said of helping the Giants’ offense. “Take some pressure off the quarterback. When his go-to guy might be double-teamed, he has another option. Just adds some depth to the room.”
Fields already seems to have a good understanding of where he can fit in on the Giants, which should aid him as he looks to provide a positive impact as a rookie.
