Giants Move Two Outfielders to the IL, Recall Promising Prospects

The San Francisco Giants announced that starting centerfielder Harrison Bader and utility outfielder Jared Oliva will be placed on the 10-day injured list.

In addition, the Giants are recalling outfielders Will Brennan and Drew Gilbert from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the two roster spots.

San Francisco Giants Move Bader and Oliva to IL

Harrison Bader was signed to a 2-year/ $20.5 million contract this offseason to shore up the Giants’ outfield defense. He is a former Gold Glove winner and had a career year in 2025. He batted .277, tallied 17 home runs and 54 RBIs with both the Twins and Phillies last season.

But Bader is off to a slow offensive start through 15 games with the Giants. He is only slashing .115/ .145/ .192 and only has 6 hits in 52 at-bats. The center fielder is also posting a -0.2 WAR.

Some of his lack of production could be attributed to a minor hamstring injury he has dealt with since spring training. After sitting out in back-to-back games for the Giants, Bader was moved to the 10-day IL with a “left hamstring strain.”

Jared Oliva was moved to the 10-day IL because of a “left wrist hamate fracture.” He has mainly played throughout the minor leagues. Oliva last played in the MLB with the Pirates in 2021, where he only saw 40 at-bats. But he impressed the Giants with his speed and defense during spring training to make the Opening Day roster.

However, he only played in 7 games and recorded 1 hit in 7 at-bats for the big league club.

Drew Gilbert Giants

Giants Recall Brennan and Gilbert

Both Will Brennan and Drew Gilbert are left-handed hitters who were potential options to platoon with Bader if he continued to struggle. The Giants also have no left-handed hitters on their bench, which was an odd Opening Day move.

Gilbert was acquired last season when the Giants traded reliever Tyler Rogers to the Mets. This is not Gilbert’s first stint with the major league club. He saw action mainly as a right fielder and played 39 games for the Giants last season.

Gilbert started his 2026 season with Triple-A Sacramento and has a .289 with a .789 OPS.

Brennan has played four seasons in the majors, all with the Cleveland Guardians. The 28-year-old has a career batting average of .267 and a .680 OPS. The Giants signed Brennan to a 1-year major league contract this offseason to provide outfield depth. He has a .392 batting average and .938 OPS in 11 games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Both Brennan and Gilbert are in today’s starting lineup for the Giants, with Gilbert starting in center field and Brennan in left.
