Giants Great Lawrence Taylor Suffers Medical Emergency: Report

New York Giants great Lawrence Taylor, a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker and one of the best defensive players in the league’s history, suffered a medical emergency on Friday, April 24, and was hospitalized, according to a report.

TMZ and USA Today report that the celebrated Giants player went to an emergency room on Friday and was then transferred within the facility. The good news is that his medical emergency is not believed to be serious enough to be life-threatening, according to the report, and Taylor should be released.

“We confirmed Taylor, 67, arrived at the emergency room and was shortly transferred to a different section of the facility,” TMZ stated in their report. “Those close to Taylor told us it doesn’t sound like whatever he’s dealing with is too serious… and the belief is he will be discharged soon, if he has not been already.”

Taylor was the No. 2 overall pick by the Giants in the 1981 NFL Draft. He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion, Rookie of the Year and the 1986 NFL MVP. He also won the Defensive Player of the Year award multiple times with the Giants. He’s simply considered one of the best in his position ever in the NFL. Our hearts and prayers go out to him during this time.

Lawrence Taylor Previously Opened Up About Challenges

Taylor has been open about his struggles with health and addiction. During an interview with Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” back in 2012, he talked about his struggle with self-discipline.

“Nowadays, you guys are on 24-hours-a-day so everything that happens is actually exploited a little bit more or is blown up a little bit more and more people know about it,” Taylor said according to the NFL’s official website. “So now you have to really discipline yourself. For years, I had no discipline. I could do what I wanted to do as far as playing in New York.”

Later in the interview, he added, “And all I can do is just say, ‘Hey, you’ve got to learn from your experiences.’ That’s one thing I’ve done. I’ve taken the long road on a lot of different things. I’ve taken the long road, you know like when I had my drug problem.”

Lawrence Taylor Was a ‘Dominant Force on Defense’

In Taylor’s Pro Football Hall of Fame profile, they call him a “dominant force on defense, Taylor was named first-team All-Pro in each of his first nine seasons.”

They add that Taylor’s “ability to dominate a game with his attack style changed the outside linebacker position from a read-and-react posture to an aggressive mode.”

Beginning in Taylor’s first season, the Giants started a fantastic 10-season streak in which they made the playoffs six times and won two Super Bowls. He had a lot to do with the team’s success during that time.

“Thirteen years of enjoyable times,” he said in a quote on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s official website. “I’ve done everything I can do. I’ve been to Super Bowls, I’ve been to playoffs, I’ve been a dominant force. I’ve earned the respect of players and people in general around the country.”
