Fremont man suspected of Marin robbery, carjacking arrested in Contra Costa County after pursuit

A robbery suspect was arrested on allegations he stole a vehicle from a Marin County home and then carjacked a driver while fleeing authorities.

Richard Montiel Contreras, 34, of Fremont was arrested in Contra Costa County on suspicion of robbery, residential burglary, vehicle theft, carjacking, resisting arrest, evading an officer and being a repeat felony offender. He was booked into the Marin County Jail, where his bail was set at $310,000.

The incident began around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when police were alerted to a robbery at the Macy’s store in Corte Madera, Central Marin police Sgt. Jeff Peterson said Monday. Officers arrested two suspects at the scene. A third drove away and was spotted on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Peterson said.

Officers were notified later about a potential sighting of the alleged robber on Forbes Avenue in San Rafael. The suspect escaped from a sheriff’s deputy who tried to detain him, Peterson said.

The suspect then broke into a house on Island Drive in San Anselmo and stole the owner’s vehicle, Peterson said. He led a vehicle pursuit that ended when a deputy was involved in a collision, the Central Marin police said.

The suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle and carjacked a driver in San Rafael, Peterson said. From there he fled to San Pablo, where he exited the car and was arrested, Peterson said.

Also detained were Dorothy McGriff, 30, of San Rafael and Alair Woodcock, 34, of Alameda, who were arrested on suspicion of burglary and conspiracy charges. McGriff also allegedly possessed narcotics and had a warrant for her arrest out of Santa Clara County, according to Central Marin police.
