Former Steelers QB Expected to Sign with Ravens: Report

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost one quarterback from a season ago, and it is not future first-ballot Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers yet. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, veteran Skylar Thompson is expected to sign with the arch-rival Baltimore Ravens after spending the 2025 season in Pittsburgh as a practice squad quarterback. The Ravens are currently carrying five quarterbacks on their roster with this addition.

Pittsburgh now presumably has four notable quarterbacks in or around the room. Veteran Mason Rudolph, second-year quarterback Will Howard, third-round draft choice Drew Allar, and Rodgers, who remains unsigned but is believed to likely return for at least one more NFL season.

Skylar Thompson Didn’t Receive Much Playing Time with Pittsburgh Steelers

Skylar Thompson

GettyQB Skylar Thompson broke into the league with the Miami Dolphins back in 2022.

Again, Thompson did not see a lot of significant snaps at all while in the Steel City this past season. While Rodgers was the starter, Rudolph and Howard were the backups. Thompson essentially played the role of emergency quarterback in case any of the three got hurt in some form or fashion.

A former seventh-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2022, Thompson would go on to play the next three seasons on South Beach before coming to Pittsburgh. The Kansas State star has played in 11 career games, started four times, and posted a record of 1-3. A career completion mark of 58.7%, Thompson has proven to be a decent insurance policy for the teams that he has been on.

For the Steelers, the vision is starting to become a bit clearer. If Rodgers returns once more, new head coach Mike McCarthy will have four quarterbacks at his disposal. Two longtime veterans in Rodgers and Rudolph, and two developmental quarterbacks in Howard and Allar. Thompson being there in 2026 simply didn’t make sense, seeing as he likely would’ve been the team’s fifth quarterback if it chose to re-sign him. He also was never going to overtake Rodgers or Rudolph on the depth chart, and it wouldn’t have made sense to try to develop him in his fifth year.

Mike McCarthy Is in a Great Situation

Mike McCarthy

GettySteelers head coach Mike McCarthy is heading into his 19th career season as an NFL head coach.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could not have hired a better coach for their current situation. After finishing the 2025 season ranked 25th in total offense, the organization hired an offensive coach. In fact, it hired one of the league’s best offensive coaches. As evidenced by his 13-year run with the Green Bay Packers, in which he led the team to eight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win, McCarthy knows how to lead a great offense.

Part of the reason why he has been so great as an offensive coach is because of his ability to coach and develop great quarterbacks. Throughout his great career, he has coached the likes of Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Rodgers, Dak Prescott, Alex Smith, and others. Steelers fans should be thrilled about him taking over for former head coach Mike Tomlin.
