Former Ravens Quarterback to Compete on Team USA’s Flag Football Team

With the Olympic Games being just around the corner in 2028, many names are putting their names in the hat for the USA Flag Football team.

One of these names happen to be a former Baltimore Ravens quarterback in Robert Griffin III. Griffin announced that he will be participating on his official X account.

“Proud and Honored to announce that I will be going for Gold in Flag Football with the USA National Team in 2028. The journey starts now and there is no greater honor than wearing USA across your chest and representing something more than yourself. USA! USA! USA!” Griffin wrote on his official X account.

Robert Griffin III Is a Former Number 2 Overall Pick

Nicknamed “RG3”, Griffin was drafted to the then-Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL draft. Griffin was a standout at Baylor University where he won the Heisman trophy.

Griffin threw for 10,366 yards while he was at Baylor University recording 78 touchdowns in his college career.

“[Robert Griffin III is a] Once-in-a-generation transcendent student-athlete lifted Baylor to decades-high heights en route to earning 2011 Heisman Trophy Memorial Award. [He is an] Exceptional athlete and leader became not only face of Baylor football program but ambassador of Baylor University in four years in Waco.” The Baylor Football website says.

In 2011, he started all 13 games before becoming the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner. After being selected number 2 overall in the NFL draft, Griffin went on to win the Rookie of the Year in 2012. Griffin led the Redskins to their first division title since 1999 and was selected to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year.

Robert Griffin III’s NFL Career

RG3’s NFL career has been characterized as starting good, but falling in a tragic way. Though Griffin had a great college career and a wonderful NFL rookie year, things changed when he was injured in the playoffs of that same year.

In a 2013 wild card playoff game, Griffin tore his ACL, LCL, and Meniscus.

“Griffin struggled mightily in his first season back from injury, tallying 3,203 yards and 16 touchdowns to 12 interceptions and failing to record a rushing touchdown in 13 appearances. Griffin was held out of Washington’s final three games under the auspices of preserving his health.” David Suggs wrote in a Sporting News article.

Though his season was derailed, his stats in his rookie year was one to remember:

  • Completion percentage: 65.6%
  • Passer rating: 102.4
  • Passing yards: 3,200
  • Yards per attempt: 8.1
  • Passing touchdowns: 20
  • Interceptions: 5
  • Rushing yards: 815
  • Rushing yards per attempt: 6.8
  • Rushing touchdowns: 7

After a myriad of injuries throughout his career, Griffin spent three years with the Baltimore Ravens in a backup role. The last time we saw RG3 in an NFL uniform was in 2020.

Now that he is participating in the Olympic Games in 2028, Griffin will have the opportunity to turn back the clock.
