Former Packers QB Lands Rookie Minicamp Tryout With AFC Foe: Report

Quarterback Clayton Tune started for his second NFL team during the Green Bay Packers 2025 regular season finale. The Houston Texans have a chance to become his third.

The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander reported Wednesday morning Tune will attempt to make the Texans offseason roster this weekend. The quarterback will try out for Houston at the team’s rookie minicamp.

In two appearances with the Packers last season, Tune went 7 of 15 with 42 passing yards. He also started for the Arizona Cardinals during the 2023 campaign.

During Week 18 versus the Minnesota Vikings, Tune completed 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards. He also rushed for 23 yards.

Tune has gone 0-2 in his two starts. In 15 NFL appearances, he went 21-for-38 with 112 passing yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Ex-Packers QB Clayton Tune Trying out for Texans

Tune could be one of a few different quarterbacks to try out for the Texans during the team’s rookie minicamp. After the 2026 NFL Draft, Houston only had three quarterbacks on its offseason roster.

While that will be enough when the regular season starts, NFL teams typically carry four quarterbacks on 90-man offseason rosters.

Tune could join the Texans and potentially compete with Graham Mertz for the team’s QB3 job. Houston drafted Mertz in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Mertz, though, has never played in an NFL game.

Tune has more experience, but it hasn’t exactly been impressive experience. That’s an understatement, as Tune has averaged only 2.9 yards per pass in his NFL career.

With the Packers last season, he posted 2.8 yards per attempt. Tune had nearly as many yards lost with four sacks (41) in his start last year as he did passing and rushing yards combined.

In addition to his Week 18 start, Tune appeared in the team’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens during Week 17. Tune went 1-for-4 with eight yards and an interception versus the Ravens. He also took a sack.

The Texans will hold their rookie minicamp from May 7-9.

Packers QB Depth After Signing Veteran Tyrod Taylor

Coming off their rookie minicamp from May 1-2, the Packers made their own quarterback move to begin this week. Green Bay signed veteran Tyrod Taylor as a new backup behind Jordan Love.

In a corresponding move, the Packers released signal-caller Desmond Ridder.

With the addition of Taylor, Green Bay has solidified its quarterback room. Love is obviously the team’s starter while Taylor will bring a lot of experience as a backup.

This offseason, the Packers added 2025 sixth-rounder Kyle McCord and undrafted rookie free agent Kyron Drones. Both are developmental projects who should compete for the QB3 job this summer.

McCord spent his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Drones was a dual-threat quarterback with the Virginia Tech Hokies last year.

The Cardinals picked Tune at No. 139 overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. After two seasons, the Cardinals waived the quarterback following the 2025 preseason.

Green Bay added him to its practice squad last August. Injuries to Love and Malik Willis pushed him into a starting role late last season.

But the Packers elected to replace him with McCord on their offseason roster this spring.

Tune had a brief stint on a UFL roster early this offseason. That league could become an alternative route for the quarterback if he doesn’t make the Texans roster this weekend.
