Former New York Yankees Player Released By Current MLB Team

On Friday night, the Philadelphia Phillies are playing the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in Florida.

The Phillies are coming off a series with the San Francisco Giants (at home).

Former New York Yankees Player Now A Free Agent

Earlier in the day, news came out that Lou Trivino had been released from the organization (h/t Tim Kelly of On Pattison).

@PhilliesNation wrote: “RHP Lou Trivino has opted out of his minor league contract with the Phillies, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs announced. Has a 2.77 ERA this year with the IronPigs.”

Trivino is coming off a season where he pitched in 47 games for the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Phillies.

He went 3-2 with a 3.97 ERA.

Trivino’s MLB Career

Trivino was picked in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

He spent the first four and a half seasons of his career with the Athletics.

In that span, the 34-year-old went 20-23 with a 4.04 ERA in 260 games.

The New York Yankees then traded for Trivino during the 2022 season.

They wrote (via X) on August 1, 2022: “The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired RHP Frankie Montas and RHP Lou Trivino from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for LHP JP Sears, INF Cooper Bowman, RHP Luis Medina and LHP Ken Waldichuk.”

During his short stint in New York, Trivino was outstanding, going 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA in 25 games.

However, he got hurt.

Max Goodman of NJ.com wrote (on November 17, 2023): “With the #Yankees electing to non-tender Lou Trivino tonight, both players acquired in the Frankie Montas trade are no longer in the organization. Both are free agents. Trivino was projected to make over $4 million this year. He underwent Tommy John surgery last May.”

Phillies And Yankees Right Now

The Phillies are the fourth-place team in the National League East with a 12-19 record in 31 games.
