The Kansas Jayhawks are considered one of the blue blood programs in college basketball. They have a long history of success, dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Bill Self has helped elevate the program into a national title contender almost every year.
Over the last few years, the Jayhawks have started to utilize the Transfer Portal more. Hunter Dickinson was one of the high-profile additions the Jayhawks made. He was a former All-Big Ten performer at Michigan before he decided to transfer to Kansas.
Dickinson transferred to Kansas prior to the 2023-24 season. He was expected to keep the Jayhawks playing at a national championship level. Instead, Dickinson claims he had a horrible experience in Lawrence.
Former Kansas Player Hunter Dickinson Rips His Time With the Jayhawks
Dickinson chose Kansas after getting a ton of NIL money to play for the Jayhawks. Despite the large paycheck, he still complained about his time in Lawrence while appearing on Run Your Race.
“We had a ton of people who were just hating…For me, it got to a point I didn’t like playing. We would come to the gym and it would feel like such a job. The games got to the point where I was like bro, I don’t even want to play right now. And I was one of the ones who handled it better, so you can only imagine how some of the dudes are feeling.
Dickinson even claims that his teammates checked out at the end of the 2025 season because they were ready to be finished playing.
“It just got so bad to the point that dudes were through with it. They were just through with it. I, obviously it was my last year, I’m like, ‘We gotta try to fix this.’ But some dudes were just like, ‘Get me out of here, bro.’”
Hunter Dickinson Blames Fans for Poor Jayhawks Experience
It’s clear that Dickinson was not ready for the change that Kansas was compared to Michigan. The Kansas fans are certainly passionate about their team. A lot of that stems from the fact that they don’t have a pro team near the city of Lawrence when it comes to basketball.
Dickinson got paid a lot of NIL money to play with the Kansas Jayhawks, although he claims it was not seven figures. Regardless, college athletes are now starting to get paid like professionals. There is a different territory that comes with that.
Last season, the Jayhawks lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Arkansas. If the team was checked out as Dickinson claims, that would explain that loss. Still, the Jayhawks won a national title just four years ago. It’s clear the expectations don’t weigh heavily on everyone.
Dickinson has yet to find a foothold in the NBA. Since leaving the Jayhawks, Dickinson went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft. He has spent most of this season in the G-League as he tries to earn a full-time NBA contract. Meanwhile, Kansas is a four-seed in this year’s NCAA bracket.
