A former highly touted New York Jets quarterback has found a new home.
The New Orleans Saints are signing QB Zach Wilson in free agency, per Insider Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
“Adds a veteran presence and some competition to the QB room behind Tyler Shough,” Underhill posted. “He gives New Orleans a third quarterback with starting experience.”
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said it’ll be a one-year deal for Wilson and the Saints.
The Journey Continues for Wilson
Wilson, 26, will turn 27 before the start of the 2026 season.
He started his career as the No. 2 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. The former BYU product spent the first three years of his career with the green and white.
Long story short, it didn’t go well.
Wilson appeared in 34 games and made 33 starts with the Jets. With those opportunities, Wilson completed 57% of his passes, threw for 6,293 passing yards, and had a 23 touchdown to 25 interception ratio.
After a turbulent run, the Jets hit the eject button, trading him to the Denver Broncos in 2024. Gang Green flipped Wilson and a 2024 seventh-round pick for a 2024 sixth-round pick.
Wilson spent a year with Denver and then became an unrestricted free agent last offseason. He quickly found a new home with the Miami Dolphins on a surprisingly strong one-year, $6 million deal fully guaranteed. Now he gets another opportunity in New Orleans.
Since leaving New York, Wilson has gotten very few opportunities. He didn’t play in Denver, and in Miami, he only appeared in four games with no starts.
Flurry of Quarterback Activity
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic posted, “Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, Trevor Siemian, and Josh Johnson have all found homes in free agency. Teams clearly liked what they saw from the 2021-2023 era Jets QB rooms. #FreeMikeWhite”
Flacco re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, March 24. Johnson joined Cincinnati last week. Siemian inked a deal with the Atlanta Falcons in free agency.
Latest on Jets QB2 Search
On the brand new “Jets Collective” podcast, ESPN’s Rich Cimini spilled the tea on what he is hearing with the Jets QB2 situation.
“So they’re obviously going to sign someone or trade for someone. You saw Joe Flacco today sign with Cincinnati. The Jets were not interested in Joe Flacco. Woody Johnson, not the biggest fan. Also, Joe Flacco got $6 million from Cincinnati, and there was no way that the Jets were going to pay $6 million for their backup job. Joe really likes Cincinnati. So the Jets were never in on Joe Flacco,” Cimini explained.
“Tyrod Taylor is still free. Cooper Rush was cut recently by Baltimore. He did not play great last year. He had two starts, and he played poorly, but he did some good things a few years ago in Dallas when he had that run when Dak Prescott was out … I mean, it is wide open at this point. I think they will bring in a veteran, and I think possibly they could draft a guy. I don’t think it’ll be an early draft pick, but they could bring in a developmental type guy to be their third quarterback,” Cimini said.
