Former Eagles Super Bowl Champion WR in Hot Water With Fraud Allegations: Report

Former NFL wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was arrested for allegedly committing insurance fraud this week according to TMZ Sports.

Police arrested Jeffery for “insurance fraud and conceal/fail to disclose insurance benefits or payment.”

TMZ Sports also reported police booked the former wideout in jail around 8 am Wednesday. Authorities have since released him.

Jeffery played nine seasons in the NFL, the final four of which he spent with the Philadelphia Eagles. During his first season with the team in 2017, the Eagles won the Super Bowl.

In 2017, Jeffery posted 57 catches for 789 yards and nine touchdowns. He had 843 yards on 65 catches with six scores the following season.

Jeffery made the Pro Bowl once during his career. He finished his 9-year NFL tenure with 475 receptions, 6,786 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Over four seasons with the Eagles, had had 171 catches, 2,237 receiving yards and 20 scores in 46 contests.

GettyTMZ Sports reported authorities arrested former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery for insurance fraud this week.

The TMZ Sports staff added in its report it reached out to Jeffery for comment. In the publication’s initial report, the receiver had yet to respond.

By Friday morning, a representative of Jeffery’s, Denise White, shared a statement with TMZ Sports.

“These are unfounded allegations only, and Alshon has not been convicted of any offense,” the statement read. “He will address this matter through the legal process, and he remains confident that the facts will demonstrate this was a misunderstanding and nothing more.”

Jeffery faces the insurance fraud allegations in California. According to laws in that state, insurance fraud charges is a felony and can carry up to five years in prison. The charges could yield a fine that’s double the amount of the fraud either instead of jail time or in addition to.

The Chicago Bears drafted Jeffery in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He went to the Bears at No. 45 overall in that class.

In Chicago, he helped create a formidable duo with fellow former receiver Brandon Marshall. During the 2013 season, both Jeffery and Marshall eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark.

Jeffery set a career high with 1,421 receiving yards in that season. He also registered a career-best 89 receptions.

During 2014, he hit a high-water mark in touchdowns with 10.


Jeffery’s NFL Career Ended With Eagles Release

After his sixth consecutive season with at least 775 receiving yards during 2018, Jeffery began to decline with the Eagles at 29 years old in 2019. He played 10 games during that campaign, posting 43 catches for 490 yards and four touchdowns.

Jeffery missed the end of that season because of a foot injury.

During 2020, the wideout saw an even more massive decline. In seven contests, he averaged 19.2 yards per catch but had just six receptions for 115 yards. Jeffery also had a touchdown.

In 2020, Jeffery again dealt with a foot issue.

The Eagles released the wide receiver on March 17, 2021. He didn’t get another NFL opportunity.

Philadelphia initially signed Jeffery to a 1-year deal in 2017. After the Super Bowl, the wideout received a new 4-year, $52 million contract.

Jeffery didn’t have the opportunity to finish the final season of that deal. But in his NFL career, he earned about $63 million according to Spotrac.
