The Dallas Cowboys have some difficult decisions to make this offseason, namely at the wide receiver position. George Pickens, who Dallas acquired last May from the Pittsburgh Steelers, put up impressive numbers with the Cowboys this year, but is now an unrestricted free agent.
Dallas is well over the salary cap as of early February, so it’ll need to clear up some money before free agency kicks off. Pickens will be a player they’ll have to decide if they want to keep around, and it won’t be cheap; his market value according to Spotrac is four years at roughly $30 million in AAV.
But, famed NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens made a bold claim at Super Bowl week to the California Post. Owens believes that, if given a choice, he’d take Pickens over Ceedee Lamb.
âBoth of them are great receivers,â Owens said. âBut, in my estimation, [Pickensâ] catching ability, his catch radius, his ability to go up and make plays when there arenât plays; he offers a lot more down the field when it comes to being a deep threat and being a playmaker.â
Owens Claims Pickens is a Better Receiver Than Lamb
Owens’ claim that Pickens is better than Lamb is certainly a bold one, but it is probably more popular around the league than many might think. Pickens was held up in Pittsburgh by a stagnant offense in his first few seasons while Lamb has been with the high-flying Dallas offense for the entirety of his career.
Our first taste of Pickens in a Dallas uniform this year showed that he has higher potential than he ever showed with the Steelers. He shattered his career highs in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and touchdowns (9). Pickens was named a second-team All-Pro for his efforts.
Meanwhile, Lamb narrowly crossed the 1,000 yard threshold and only had three touchdowns. Granted, he did play in three fewer games after an injury early in the season, but there’s still a real argument to be made that Pickens took the mantle as No. 1 receiver this season.
With that being said, the two of them together is an elite combo, one of the best one-two punches at WR in the league. If Dallas clears some cap space and offers Pickens the contract that he’ll be commanding, they’ll be well set to continue to cruise on offense.
Pickens Put Up Career-Best Numbers in 2025
Heading into his first walk-year of his career, Pickens proved that he is worth a max wide receiver contract. A former second round draft pick, Pickens always had the talent to be a No. 1 NFL wide receiver, but he struggled to prove it in Pittsburgh.
Now that we’ve seen him in a pass heavy Cowboys offense that will likely stay that way as long as Dak Prescott remains the quarterback, Dallas should make Pickens a priority this offseason.
With that being said, the Cowboys do need to invest in their defense, which was once again one of the worst in the NFL in 2025. Especially with the loss of Micah Parsons last summer, real improvements need to be made to make them even a middling defense.
Even with just a top-20 defense, Dallas could easily make the playoffs with their offense.
