Former Broncos QB Provides Major Update on NFL Future

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson could soon be making one of the more unexpected moves of the NFL offseason.

According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Wilson revealed that the New York Jets have extended him a contract offer after his recent free-agent visit with the team.

The veteran quarterback said he is currently “weighing his options” as he considers what could be the next chapter of his career.

“It was great,” Wilson said of his Jets visit, via the New York Post.

Wilson, now 37 years old, spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Broncos before later landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.

Now, after a brief stint with the Giants in 2025, Wilson could potentially stay in New York and make the rare jump across town to the Jets.

The situation becomes even more interesting considering Wilson would not be walking into a starting role.

The Jets are currently expected to move forward with Geno Smith as their starter, reuniting Wilson with his former Seattle Seahawks teammate. The two quarterbacks spent years together in Seattle before Smith later revived his career and emerged as a Pro Bowl starter.

Jets Could Offer Wilson Meaningful Veteran Role

Even though Smith is expected to lead the offense, the Jets could still provide Wilson with a meaningful role on a team trying to compete immediately.

Wilson has appeared in 205 career games and thrown for nearly 47,000 passing yards with 353 touchdowns during his NFL career.

While his days as a franchise centerpiece may be behind him, teams still value experienced veteran quarterbacks who can stabilize a locker room, mentor younger players and step in if needed.

The Jets have dealt with quarterback instability for years and adding a veteran with Wilson’s résumé could appeal to the organization.

His experience in big games, playoff runs and high-pressure situations would instantly make him the most accomplished quarterbacks in the building.

There is also familiarity involved.

Wilson and Smith have maintained a strong relationship dating back to their Seahawks days, and that dynamic could help make the transition smoother if Wilson decides to sign.

TV Networks Also Pursuing Former Broncos QB

Wilson’s decision may not come down strictly to football.

The former Broncos quarterback has also considered a potential move into television as a broadcaster or analyst, so a lot remains up in the air right now as he takes time to evaluate his options.

According to Dunleavy, multiple television networks are also pursuing Wilson for broadcasting opportunities, with CBS reportedly interested in bringing him aboard for a studio role. Former NFL quarterbacks have become highly sought-after television personalities in recent years, with networks aggressively pursuing recognizable names.

That could complicate Wilson’s football future.

If Wilson chooses television, it would likely mark the beginning of the next phase of his career after spending over a decade as one of the league’s most recognizable quarterbacks.

But if he still believes he can contribute on the field, the Jets may present a unique opportunity. Smith struggled at times in Las Vegas last season and also dealt with injuries. That could potentially give Wilson an opportunity to eventually step into a starting role at some point next season.

For now, Wilson appears to be taking his time before making what could become one of the biggest career decisions of his post-Broncos era.
