Former Bills Coordinator Gets Update on Interview to Replace Sean McDermott

Brian Daboll has made no secret of the fact he is hoping to land the Buffalo Bills head coaching role, and he’ll reportedly get his chance to land the gig Thursday.

Daboll will interview with Bills brass, like general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula, for an in-person meeting to discuss him replacing Sean McDermott as Buffalo head coach, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Daboll was fired by the New York Giants on Nov. 10 after going 20-40-1 in his nearly four-year tenure there. He did, however, win NFL Coach of the Year in 2022 while guiding New York to the playoffs and winning its only postseason game in the past 15 seasons.

McDermott, who was Daboll’s boss for four seasons when he was the Bills offensive coordinator from 2018-21, was of course let go by the Bills on Monday after their 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos on Saturday in the AFC Divisional Round.

Brian Daboll Is Interviewing For The Bills Head Coach Position

Daboll has a track record of offense that goes as far back as the beginning of the Tom Brady-era with the New England Patriots. He has been an offensive coordinator since 2009 but has had varying levels of success, especially without Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Still, the Bills still have Allen, an MVP finalist again, and he and Daboll made magic during their first go-around together last decade. That is a key ingredient to Buffalo considering Daboll for the role.

“Former New York Giants coach Brian Daboll will meet with owner Terry Pegula, Brandon Beane and other key Bills decision-makers today,” Russini posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The 50-year-old’s top choice is to become Buffalo’s next head coach. Today, he gets a shot at an in-person interview.”

The Bills head coach position is arguably the best-available role, due to Allen and the fact they have won a playoff game in six straight years. Buffalo has won the AFC East in five of the past six seasons. Plus, the Bills will open their new Highmark Stadium across the parking lot from their former home stadium in Orchard Park, New York.

With Allen and new amenities, plus a potential Super Bowl-contending roster and a fresh head coach, the hope will be for Buffalo to land marquee free agents this offseason while still seeking the franchise’s ever-elusive first Super Bowl championship.

Brian Daboll Will Have A Job Even If He Doesn’t Land The Bills Head Coach Role

Daboll is a hot commodity available this coaching cycle, and he already reportedly has a role lined up whether or not he gets the Bills head coach position.

According to Russini, Daboll has already turned down the Philadelphia Eagles offensive-coordinator position while lining himself up for the Bills head coach opening. She also reported he will be the Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator if Buffalo chooses a different candidate as its head coach.

If he goes to Tennessee, Daboll will coach under former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and with budding second-year quarterback, and 2025 No. 1 overall pick, Cam Ward.
