Former Alabama National Champion Pleads Guilty in Shocking NFL Impersonation Scheme

A former Alabama Crimson Tide football defensive lineman is now at the center of one of the most bizarre fraud cases in recent memory.

According to a report from ESPN, former Alabama defensive tackle Luther Davis has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges tied to impersonating NFL players in a multimillion-dollar scheme.

Davis entered guilty pleas to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and identity theft-related charges in a case that stunned both the college and professional football worlds.

Inside the Luther Davis Alleged $20 Million Scheme

Federal prosecutors say Davis, along with co-defendant CJ Evins, orchestrated an elaborate operation that netted nearly $20 million in fraudulent loans.

According to court filings and reporting, the scheme involved impersonating NFL players, using fake email accounts, creating fraudulent driver’s licenses, and conducting video calls while wearing disguises such as wigs and makeup.

The goal was to convince lenders they were dealing with legitimate professional athletes with high-value contracts.

None of the NFL players whose identities were used were aware of the scheme or authorized any financial activity.

Which NFL Players Were Targetted by Luther Davis?

Previous reports tied the scheme to impersonations of multiple high-profile NFL players, including Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, and Green Bay Packers defensive back Xavoer McKinney.

Prosecutors allege the conspirators used these identities to secure at least a dozen fraudulent loans between 2023 and 2024.

From National Champion to Federal Court

Davis was once part of Alabama’s national championship team in 2009, playing under legendary head coach Nick Saban.
