After a year away from the NFL, former San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke is back. The last NFL fans saw of Baalke, he was the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. Of course, he is best known for his longtime tenure with the Niners. For 12 seasons (2005-2016), Baalke was a scout, the director and vice president of player personnel, and the general manager of the 49ers.
Now, he is a member of the Cleveland Browns. According to CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz, Baalke will be a consultant for the organization.
Trent Baalke Was an Integral Piece for the San Francisco 49ers
GettyTrent Baalke first broke into the NFL as a scout for the New York Jets in 1998.
Baalke was a scout for San Francisco in the mid 2000s when they drafted the likes of future Hall of Fame running back Frank Gore, Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith, and All-Pro tight end Vernon Davis. He was also around when the organization struck gold on defense by adding Hall of Fame linebacker Patrick Willis and All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman.
Another notable achievement he had was hiring Jim Harbaugh back in 2011 when he took over as GM. Much of the team’s success under Baalke’s leadership came during Harbaugh’s four-year tenure. In between 2011 and 2013, the 49ers won 36 combined regular-season games, made at least the NFC Championship game in each of those years, and made the team’s first Super Bowl appearance, at the time, in nearly two decades.
The 49ers would go on to part ways with Baalke after the 2016 season. That would pave the way for the organization to hire current GM John Lynch, as well as current head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Trent Baalke Helped Bring the Jaguars Back
GettyTrent Baalke drafted Jaguars Pro Bowl quarterback Trevor Lawrence in 2021.
After Baalke’s time in the Bay Area came to an end, he would travel to Jacksonville to become part of the Jaguars’ front office. Aside from making a couple of interesting head-coaching hires in Urban Meyer and Doug Pederson, both of whom did not work out, Baalke deserves the credit for bringing hope to the franchise and fan base as their GM.
Not only did he draft the team’s current franchise quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, but he also brought in former all-purpose machine Travis Etienne Jr., 1,000-yard receiver Christian Kirk, and Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram. While Lawrence is the only one from the group still on the team, these additions helped the Jaguars win their only playoff game over the last eight seasons in 2022.
Anytime you can bring in an executive with nearly three decades of front office experience, that is a good thing. The Cleveland Browns could be in a great spot with Baalke in the fold.
The 49ers, on the other hand, have rebounded nicely since they parted ways with him. They have made five playoff appearances and multiple Super Bowl appearances since they moved on from him before the 2017 season. Time will tell if Baalke can have a positive effect in Cleveland.
