The incident happened around 5 p.m. south of Poplar Beach, said San Mateo County sheriff’s Sgt. Javier Acosta. Deputies arrived to find the aircraft intact and unoccupied.

A 50-year-old Miami, Fla., man was found walking away from the plane, Acosta said. Neither he nor anyone on the ground was hurt.

An investigation revealed that the single-engine plane had been stolen from the Palo Alto Airport. The man was taken into custody and was expected to be booked into San Mateo County jail on charges related to the theft of an aircraft, Acosta said.
