Fireworks Between Geno Auriemma, Dawn Staley Explode After South Carolina Downs UCONN

The first showdown of the Women’s College Basketball Final Four on Friday ended with a fiery interaction between UCONN head coach Geno Auriemma and South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley.

The Gamecocks bested the Huskies by a score of 62-48 on April 3 to earn a spot in the national championship game on Sunday. As is typical following any basketball contest at the collegiate or professional level, the two coaches met in front of the scorer’s table following the matchup.

Video shared of the ESPN broadcast by Def Pen Sports on social media showed Auriemma saying something to Staley that enraged her and led to a shouting match.

Referees and members from the two coaching staffs soon stepped in between the two championship-winning coaches to stop the situation from getting further out of hand.

“Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma had some words at the end of this South Carolina vs UCONN game 👀,” the video caption said.

“Now Dawn and Geno getting into it a little bit on the sideline, as Geno has to be held back,” ESPN’s Ryan Ruocco said on the live broadcast. “And Dawn and Geno, that’s part of what makes this rivalry such a compelling one, as they exchange words at center court.”

However, he spoke to ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe between periods earlier in the game, during which he was critical of the officiating and how Staley was interacting with the referees from the sideline.

“There were six fouls called that quarter, all of [them] against us. And they’ve been beating the [expletive] out of our guys down there the entire game,” Auriemma said. “This is ridiculous. Their coach rants and raves on the sideline, and calls the referees some names you don’t wanna hear.”
