The Atlanta Falcons have found their backup running back, at least for now. Tyler Allgeier walked out the door in free agency earlier this move, which led to Atlanta searching for a new tailback to pair with Bijan Robinson.
Well, on Tuesday, the Falcons agreed to terms with former Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson on a contract. While Brian Robinson Jr. has the ‘Jr’ attachment to his last name, this is a funny signing because now the Falcons backfield features two ‘Robinsons’.

Brian Robinson Jr., 27, has 2,729 career rushing yards in four NFL seasons. He spent his first three seasons with the Commanders and then spent the 2025 season with the 49ers. In 2025, Robinson Jr. rushed for 400 yards on 92 carries and found the endzone twice.
He was the lead back for the Commanders in 2023 and 2024. He has 22 career touchdowns (17 rushing, five receiving). He served as the backup to Christian McCaffery last season, and he will do the same this year, but instead to Bijan Robinson.
A former third-round draft pick in 2022, Robinson Jr. played his collegiate football at Alabama, where he was a standout player, and joined the long list of Alabama running backs to play in the NFL.
Every Falcons fan knows who Bijan Robinson is, but now there’s another Robinson in the backfield, which will surely have fans a bit confused at times, especially when looking at the box score.

What Does This Signing Mean for the Falcons?
This is a somewhat expected move from the Falcons. Not in terms of name value, but the Falcons needed to acquire a backup running back after Allgeier’s departure.
Does this signing mean that Robinson Jr. is locked in as the team’s backup? Not really, but he’s certainly the leading candidate.
Brian Robinson Jr. averaged 4.3 yards per carry last year and 23.5 rushing yards per game.
The Falcons could also look to the NFL draft to bring in a player who might compete for the backup running back position.
The 6-foot-1 tailback is a downhill runner and won’t be able to evade as many tackles outside the box, unlike Bijan, who is the most shifty running back in the league, and nearly impossible to take to the ground.
