Ex-Vikings QB Kirk Cousins Given Major Free Agency Update

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins does not appear headed for a reunion in Minnesota, and Albert Breer’s latest update only sharpened that reality. Breer reported Monday, March 16, that Cousins is “in an interesting spot” entering the second week of free agency, with the veteran weighing a shrinking starter market, a backup role on a contender, or waiting for a future opening.

That matters for the Vikings because Minnesota already moved in another direction, signing Kyler Murray to a one-year deal on March 12 to compete with J.J. McCarthy. In other words, whatever curiosity existed around Kirk Cousins Vikings rumors before Murray arrived has cooled significantly.

Albert Breer Says Kirk Cousins is in “an Interesting Spot” In Week 2 of Free Agency

Breer laid out three paths for Cousins as the veteran market tightens. The first is chasing one of the few remaining starting opportunities, which Breer identified as Las Vegas or Pittsburgh, depending in part on what happens with Aaron Rodgers. The second is joining a playoff-level team as a backup, with the Rams and Chiefs among the possibilities Breer mentioned. The third is waiting for an injury-created opening later in the offseason or during the season.

There is also a money layer here. Breer noted Cousins still has a $10 million guarantee from the Falcons, which shapes how another team would value him. That makes him unusual even among late-stage free-agent quarterbacks, because his next deal may be influenced as much by fit and path to playing time as by raw salary.

For Minnesota readers, the biggest takeaway is simple: Breer’s list of realistic paths did not include the Vikings, which tracks with the team’s recent quarterback decision.

Vikings Rumors: Why Minnesota Was Connected Before the Kyler Murray Signing

Before Murray signed, the Vikings made sense as a speculative Cousins destination for one obvious reason: they still wanted veteran competition in the quarterback room. Minnesota had already seen Sam Darnold leave and was staring at a 2026 setup centered on McCarthy, who made 10 starts in 2025 after returning from a torn meniscus and finished with 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

That naturally created outside chatter about whether Cousins could return in a lower-cost, shorter-term arrangement. But Minnesota instead landed Murray on a one-year contract worth the veteran minimum, while Arizona remains responsible for the bulk of his 2026 money. Reuters also reported the deal includes a no-tag clause, making it a clean one-year swing for the Vikings.

Kirk Cousins Stats, Contract

Cousins turns 37 this season and remains one of the more accomplished passers still available. NFL stats show he threw for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 10 games in 2025 with Atlanta after posting 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 14 games in 2024. Over his career, he has 44,700 passing yards and 298 touchdown passes.

Contract-wise, Cousins originally signed a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta in March 2024, including $100 million guaranteed. Reuters later reported he and the Falcons modified the final two years of that deal in January 2026, and Breer’s latest report says Cousins still carries that $10 million guarantee from Atlanta as he searches for his next team.

So while Cousins still has value as either a bridge starter or premium backup, the Vikings appear to be out. Minnesota already made its quarterback bet for this phase of free agency, and Cousins is now left sorting through a market that seems better for everyone else than for a return to his old team.
