Ex-UFC Star Questions Ronda Rousey’s Intentions After Recent Comments

Matt Brown did not hold back when he spoke about Ronda Rousey‘s recent comments about the UFC. The former UFC veteran questioned her intentions and believes her remarks aim to draw attention rather than drive change.

Rousey sparked debate within the MMA community after criticizing the UFC Freedom 250 fight card. She later sent a scathing message to UFC matchmaker Hunter Campbell. ‘Rowdy’ expressed frustration with the promotion’s current direction after it signed their broadcast rights deal with Paramount.

Rousey, a former women’s bantamweight champion, is scheduled to face Gina Carano on May. 16 for Most Valuable Promotions. That fight was first pitched to Dana White, but the UFC later shifted in another direction.

Rousey vs. Carano will also stream live on Netflix, giving them a large platform. If successful, the streaming giant may have interest in continuing their relationship with MVP’s MMA ventures and could become a viable competitor to the UFC.

While Brown believes there is some validity to Rousey’s remarks, he questioned what her true motives are.

Ex-UFC Star Matt Brown Questions Ronda Rousey’s Motives

Matt Brown reacted to Ronda Rousey’s comments about the UFC and the current state of the sport. He expressed his doubts about her motives and recalled her mindset when she was actively competing.

‘Rowdy’ last fought in 2016, when she lost a 1st round TKO to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. Now, almost 10 years later, she is returning to the cage and eager to make a difference in the sport.

While the former women’s bantamweight champion has voiced the importance of options for fighters and change, Brown is not convinced. ‘The Immortal’ questioned whether Rousey is only voice frustration because the UFC passed on paying her and Carano for a one-off.

“[Rousey’s] emotions got the best of her and she’s like [expletive] you [expletive],” Brown said during The Fighter vs. The Writer. “I think that’s the kind of person she is. You’re either 100 percent with her or you’re 100 percent against her, which is part of her competitor mentality.”

He added:

“I don’t think she’s doing it because she thinks she’s going to invoke some change here in the world of MMA,” he said .”I think she’s doing it to get emotions out of people, I don’t want to say a pity party, but get the attention on her.”

Brown Says Rousey Would Not Have Been Vocal if UFC Booked Her Comeback

Brown also said he believes Rousey would not have voiced frustrations if the UFC booked her comeback bout. He brought up some of the current fighters on the roster who have not been given opportunities that they deserve.

“If [the UFC] would have given her a good deal on this fight [with Carano] and she still saw how they’re doing other fighters, she wouldn’t say anything about it. It all comes down to her,” Brown said on The Fighter vs. The Writer.

However, Brown acknowledged the positives of ‘Rowdy’ speaking up and said he hopes she will practice what she preaches.

“If she actually wants to invoke some change, and actually wants to see a better sport, I hope that’s her intention,” he said. “As long as she’s saying the right things, I’ll overlook the actual intention behind it.”
