Ex-Jets CB Makes Telling Comment Amid NDSU Coaching Career

Former New York Jets and North Dakota State cornerback Marcus Williams had hints of a coaching career during his playing days.

Williams, who serves as a defensive analyst with the Bison, recently shared with NewYorkJets.com how even a former NFL star once asked him for input. Former seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis played with Willliams for two seasons in New York, and Revis once sought Williams’ input.

“I wouldn’t say while I was playing that I probably thought I would be a coach today, but it definitely did help me out because I was able to help guys coming off the field,” Williams told NYJets.com’s Jim Gehman. “It’s funny, even guys like Revis would ask me questions, ‘Hey, Marcus, what did you see here? How do you see this?’ And I definitely was always helping out the younger guys that would come in as I became a veteran.”

Williams played for the Bison from 2011 to 2013, where he helped the team win three FCS national championships. He joined the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and was later released by the team, only to land with the Jets that same year.

Williams tallied 10 interceptions, 27 pass deflections, 118 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in his NFL career between 2014 and 2018. He joined the Bison coaching staff in 2025.

His prior connection with Bison head coach Tim Polasek helped him land the opportunity last year. Polasek served on the Bison staff when Williams played in Fargo.

“And once he got the job, and I knew I was done playing football, I was like, ‘I want to see what opportunities that they have here for me, see if I can come and help these guys in any way.’ He made it possible for me, and it’s been awesome ever since,” Williams said.

Williams starred in both basketball and football at Hopkins in Minnesota, but Williams opted for football. With NDSU, Williams tallied 21 interceptions, seven defensive touchdowns, and 170 tackles.

“I’ve always wanted to be around the game of football. I feel like the game has given me so much, and now I want to make sure I can give that to these guys,” Williams said. “Not only make them the best football player they can be, but also just help them be a better man, as well. I just want to make sure that I’m not only just a coach, but a mentor to these guys.”

Marcus Williams: ‘NDSU Definitely Got Me Prepared’

When Williams arrived in the NFL, his initial challenge of making a team didn’t faze him after the Texans cut him. He turned around and started for the Jets by midseason that year.

“I go back to what it was at college, me just playing high-level ball at NDSU definitely got me prepared for no matter what situation you are in,” Williams said.

Williams helped NDSU overcome hurdles the program hadn’t achieved yet in the early 2010s. That included getting past the quarterfinals in the FCS playoffs, winning the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and beating rival Northern Iowa for the first time as an FCS program.
