Ex-Chiefs Fan Favorite Gets New 2-Year Deal Ahead of NFL Free Agency

NFL free agency season is upon us, and a former Kansas City Chiefs fan favorite just got great news before the start of all the chaos next week on March 9.

“The [Washington] Commanders and veteran OL Nick Allegretti have agreed to a new two-year deal, per source,” NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported on March 2.

“Allegretti had one year left on his contract,” the insider noted in a separate post. “He’s now signed through 2027 on a deal negotiated by Nate Richman of @3XLSports.”

Pelissero also reminded NFL fans that Allegretti is “a three-time Super Bowl winner with the Chiefs, [who] started the last two games for Washington at center last season in place of injured Tyler Biadasz, who is being released.”

Allegretti left the Chiefs in search of a bigger role, and it appears he found that in Washington.

As Pelissero noted, the Commanders moved on from Biadasz before they gave Allegretti the contract extension. That would imply that they are ready to move forward with the former Chiefs seventh-rounder as their starting center.

Allegretti has been tasked with a pretty important job throughout his NFL career. After blocking for Patrick Mahomes as a key backup turned part-time starter, the veteran is now charged with protecting the Commanders’ face of the franchise, Jayden Daniels.

That journey has led to three Super Bowl rings and several championship game appearances, including one NFC title game with Daniels and the Commanders. His goal will presumably be to get back to the Super Bowl with his new team and quarterback.

Perhaps Allegretti’s claim to fame in KC was starting and playing the entire Super Bowl LVIII with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. According to KMBC, he was on the field for all 79 offensive snaps in that game, which was greatly appreciated by Chiefs Kingdom after the fact.

Later that offseason, Allegretti signed a three-year, $16 million contract. The Commanders have effectively added another year to that agreement here in 2026.

Chiefs Kingdom ‘Happy’ for Nick Allegretti Amid NFL Free Agency News

Chiefs fans reacted to the Allegretti news on social media, and it was nothing but love.

“First [Andrew] Wylie now Allegretti,” one fan wrote. “Happy for them!”

Wylie has also received a second contract with Washington this offseason.

“Congrats to our old friend, Scetti Allegretti! Well deserved! 🎉” Another KC supporter commented.

And a third said: “Hero of SB 58 playing with a torn UCL tendon….Baller. Happy for him and kinda wish the Chiefs had kept him. He was more than serviceable at the Guard-Center positions.”

Although Chiefs fans were very pleased by this free agency news, Commanders fans’ reactions were a little less celebratory.

“Allegretti has value to Washington,” one fan replied. “He can play all 3 interior spots, which provides great depth. So I was always good with him staying in Washington, even on an extension to lower his cap hit this year. But I wouldn’t feel great about him replacing Biadasz as the starting center.”

“I do not understand, or necessarily like this…” another responded. “Wylie I understand. Allegretti, I do not.”

Finally, one supporter joked, “Everyone should take this real well I’m sure.”

It seems Commanders fans would rather Allegretti return as a versatile backup rather than a starter, similar to his old role with the Chiefs.
