Ex-Browns Starting QB Traded After Hitting New Low

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is getting another chance to revive his career.

Thompson-Robinson, who started five games for the Browns across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, opened the UFL season as a backup with the Orlando Storm. Thompson-Robinson was widely expected to be the starter for Orlando but was beaten out by Jack Plummer during UFL training camp.

It turned out to be a solid decision by coach Orlando Anthony Becht, with Plummer being among the better quarterbacks in the UFL this season. Orlando is 4-0, and Plummer has passed for 853 yards, seven touchdowns, and just one interception.

With Plummer cemented as the starter, the Storm traded Thompson-Robinson to the Birmingham Stallions in exchange for quarterback Matt Corral and defensive end Amani Bledsoe. The league announced the move on Sunday.

The Stallions are 1-3, have scored a UFL-worst 65 points, and are coming off a shutout loss to the Storm. It’s assumed that Thompson-Robinson will step in as the starter and look to spark Birmingham with his dual-threat ability.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson Had Strong Start With Browns

The Browns selected Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round (No. 140 overall) of the 2023 draft out of UCLA, where he left as the program’s all-time leader in total offense.

He made an immediate impression as a rookie, winning the backup job behind Deshaun Watson after a strong preseason. When Watson went down with a shoulder injury, Thompson-Robinson was thrust into action. But the results were uneven. He finished his time in Cleveland completing 121 of 230 passes for 880 yards, with one touchdown and 10 interceptions.

Cleveland dealt Thompson-Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason as part of the Kenny Pickett trade. His stint there was brief. He was waived before the start of the regular season and, despite workouts with multiple teams, never latched onto a roster.

The Storm took a chance on him in the league’s quarterback draft in January, offering what appeared to be a legitimate path back. Early momentum pointed to Thompson-Robinson as the favorite to start for the expansion team but Plummer emerged as the better option.

Browns Still Sorting Out QB Situation

The Browns are no closer to solving their quarterback situation since Thompson-Robinson was in the mix. Cleveland heads into the draft with Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel in what the team has dubbed an “open competition.”

Watson is the lone holdover from when Thompson-Robinson was around. The former Pro Bowler is heading into the final year of his fully guaranteed contract, which he signed in 2022 following a blockbuster trade.

For Watson, this year represents his final shot to prove he can still be a viable quarterback in the NFL. He’s appeared in just 19 games since arriving in Cleveland and missed all of last season after two Achilles surgeries.

Watson has gone 9-10 as a starter with the Browns, throwing for 3,365 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It’s a far cry from the form he showed with the Houston Texans, where he led the NFL in passing yards during his last full season in 2020.
