Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs is still looking for his next NFL home after an abrupt release from the New England Patriots, and could find it with a struggling NFC South team.
Diggs was cut loose by the Patriots shortly after the team’s Super Bowl and has remained a free agent after more than a month of free agency. Though he faces uncertainty regarding his criminal charges, Diggs was still a productive recevier with the Patriots and expected to find a new home before the start of the season.
SI.com’s Gilberto Manzano broke down landing spots for some of the top remaining free agents, suggesting Diggs will sign with the struggling Atlanta Falcons. Manzano pointed out that Diggs still has a lot left in the tank.
“Diggs had a memorable comeback season, helping the Patriots advance to the Super Bowl,” Manzano wrote. “He had dominant stretches, stepped up when it mattered most and gave Drake Maye a much-needed security blanket.”
Diggs is facing felony charges related to accusations that he assaulted a former personal chef, but Manzano believes his talent will win out and Diggs will end up with the Falcons.
“But Diggsâs off-field issues were too much to ignore last season. Even if he resolves his legal matters, itâs going to be difficult for Diggs to find a team to bet on him as he enters his age-33 season,” Manzano wrote. “But the tape doesnât lie, and Diggs was extremely productive last year with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.”
The Falcons fell short of the playoffs after ending in a three-way tie at 8-9 atop the NFC South, struggling on offense at times throughout the season. The Falcons have not had a winning season since 2017, which could lead to some big moves this offseason. Signing Diggs would fit the bill, especially with the team’s murky quarterback situation.
