Everyone Wants the Cowboys to Make This NFL Draft Trade Into Top 10

Sometimes, things make so much sense that even the everyday lay person or slack-jawed media member can see it as an obvious beneficial result. There’s no need for analytics, no need to conjure up formulas to prove its sensibility–it’s just plain. That appears to be the case with a potential NFL draft day trade between the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns.

It’s not just a matter of Cowboys backers seeking to pilfer another team. It makes sense from both sides, because the Cowboys have picks No. 12 and 20 in the first round, while the Browns have No. 6 and 24.

The Browns need multiple offensive pieces in a draft dominated at the top by defense. They’d like to take an offensive lineman, but none are really worthy of a Top 6 pick. The Cowboys need a defensive stud at pretty much any position–pass-rusher, linebacker, defensive backs–but the surefire picks figure to all be off the board by the time the No. 12 pick comes around.

The Cowboys could do well by moving to No. 6. The Browns could do well by moving down to 12 and adding pick No. 20. It’s a pretty clear match.

Cowboys-Browns Trade Comes Up Most Frequently

Just about all the major mock drafts and sites seem to have taken notice, too. Of all the possible trade scenarios heading into this month’s NFL draft, the Cowboys moving to No. 6 and the Browns moving down is the most common.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell is the one to mention it most recently. In his scenario, the deal looks like this.

Proposed 3-Player Blockbuster Trade Sends Ja Morant to the Miami Heat

Browns get: 1-12, 1-20, 2027 second-round pick
“Cowboys get: 1-6, 1-24, 2027 fifth-round pick”

In Cleveland, the scenario is a common topic on talk radio, and the city’s top media site, Cleveland.com, sees a Browns-Cowboys swap going like this: “Projected trade details: Cowboys send picks 12 and 20 to the Browns for picks 6, 70 and 146.”

And the Dallas Morning News has it as well, “Dallas receives: Pick No. 6, Pick No. 39; Cleveland receives: Pick No. 12, Pick No. 20″

The popular Cowboys SB Nation site Blogging the Boys has it, too, writing, “In this scenario, we could see the Cowboys trade the 12th and 20th overall pick for Cleveland’s sixth and 39th overall pick, in this mock trade, the Browns would slightly lose on value by 12 points, but in this draft class that lacks top end talent, and with Berry’s aggressive approach to move back, this is likely a fair deal for both teams.

Top Defenders in Sight at No. 6

While it is clear what the Browns would be seeking here (No. 12 and No. 20), there is more leeway with what the Cowboys would get back. No. 39 in the second round is a sensible ask, because that would be a reasonable place for the Cowboys to take a linebacker, and there is a strong chance that Jacob Rodriguez of Texas Tech, CJ Allen of Georgia or Anthony Hill of Texas will be on the board at that spot.

The Cleveland.com scenario of receiving a third-rounder and a fifth-rounder probably has less appeal–the Cowboys need players who can get on the field in Week 1, and they’re likely to get one at No. 39.

At No. 6, the Cowboys probably won’t be high enough for Arvell Reese or David Bailey on the edge, but they’ll be in range for one of Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs or Rueben Bain. Pair one of those with, say, Rodriguez in the second round, and the Cowboys would have had a good top of the draft.
