A fast-moving brush fire forced evacuations for people living near Matheson on Colorado’s Eastern Plains on Tuesday noon, according to Elbert County officials.
Simla fire officials ordered evacuations between Elbert County Road 75 and U.S. 24 and from Elbert County Road 169 to County Road 185, county spokesperson Wendy Holmes said.
County officials are still working to confirm the size of the fire and multiple agencies are responding to the area, including a strike team from Douglas County, Holmes said.
Most of the Eastern Plains is under a high wind warning, according to the National Weather Service, with gusts up to 65 mph possible.
