ESPN Shares Surprising Grade for Patriots Signing of Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs

After making a run to the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots are doing what they can this offseason to get back to the postseason. That included signing free agent wide receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract.

This move came shortly after the Patriots decided to move on from wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and there is hope that he can replace that top-end production. It won’t be easy to do, but Doubs has a good track record, which ESPN certainly took notice of.

ESPN analyst Seth Walder recently shared that he is generally positive on the signing. So, in ESPN’s grading for free agent signings this offseason, he decided to give the Patriots a ‘B+’ grade for adding Doubs.

Why ESPN Gave the New England Patriots a B+ Grade for Signing Romeo Doubs

When the New England Patriots added Romeo Doubs, there was a pretty clear need being filled at wide receiver. However, the field of available receivers was also getting a little tight. That made finding someone like Doubs, and landing him was an impressive feat that ESPN rewarded with the ‘B+’ grade.

“Doubs is not a No. 1 receiver, but he is solid and probably a little underrated. He averaged 1.9 yards per route run last season, which ranked in the 64th percentile among wide receivers with at least 300 routes run. That was a career high, but he was at 1.8 the year prior,” Walder wrote. “He can get depth, averaging 12.7 air yards per target. In Green Bay, he ran post routes, go routes, medium crossers and deep outs more than most receivers.”

In 2025, Doubs played in 16 games and had 55 receptions for 724 yards and 6 touchdowns. That won’t quite replace the production lost with Diggs’ departure. However, it is a step in the right direction.

One strength of Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has been his deep ball. Walder noted that getting depth on his targets is also one of Doubs’ strengths. Together, there is also hope that they can become an ideal match for one another.

The Patriots Might Not Be Done Adding at Wide Receiver

There are very few experts who think the New England Patriots are done adding at wide receiver this offseason. In fact, it’s probably also not smart to stop adding now.

“Signing Doubs should not mean the Patriots are done at the receiver position this offseason. But it’s a good first move,” Walder wrote.

In particular, a trade for A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles has been rumored all offseason. That’s something EVP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf recently addressed, leaving the door open for a move.

“As far as players on other teams, going to keep the door open to anything that we think may improve our roster, whether that’s with the player you mentioned or other players,” Wolf said.

Regardless of whether or not the Patriots trade for Brown, they will also have the opportunity to select a receiver with one of their 11 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Certainly, the expectation, regardless of their future with Brown, is that they will be doing that as well.
