ESPN Ranks Alabama’s Labaron Philon Among Top March Madness Players

The 2026 NCAA Tournament is set to get underway on Thursday, and it has already been a drama-filled week for Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team as they prepare for a deep run in March Madness.

Star junior guard Aden Holloway was arrested on Monday for marijuana possession. Alabama reported Nick Kelly released details of the arrest on his X account.

With the Holloway distraction in place, Alabama has been searching for good news ahead of its matchup in Tampa against Hofstra on Friday. On Wednesday, ESPN released its rankings of the top 50 players entering March Madness 2026, and superstar Labaron Philon was near the top of the list.

Where Labaron Philon Ranks According to ESPN

Philon came in at No. 6 on ESPN’s list of the top 50 players in the NCAA Tournament.

The sophomore guard flirted with the NBA last offseason but ultimately decided to return to Tuscaloosa, where he led the Crimson Tide in scoring (21.7), assists (4.7), and steals (1.1) per game.

Philon was one of the most dynamic playmakers in college basketball this season, serving as the lead guard for one of the most prolific offenses in the country.

The rankings from ESPN were not just built around regular-season production, but also on which players could potentially make the most impact. With Aden Holloway expected to miss the tournament, Philon will be in for a heavy workload in the big dance.

Why ESPN is High on Philon

ESPN pointed to Philon’s improvement from behind the arc as one of the deciding factors for ranking him so high. The projected first round NBA draft has improved his three-point shooting percentage by nearly 10% from his freshman season.

Myron Medcalf of ESPN had this to say about Philon ahead of the tournament.

Last season, the 6-foot-4 guard made just 31.5% of his shots from 3. This season, he has connected on 40.2% of those same attempts. Philon has also graduated from a “good” to “excellent” offensive player, per Synergy Sports, which has allowed an Alabama team that lost 2024-25 All-American Mark Sears to maintain its top-five mark in offensive efficiency.

Philon is certainly one of the premier players in the tournament field this season.

What Philon Means for Alabama’s Tournament Run

For Alabama, it’s crystal clear that Philon needs to play well for the Tide to advance. Alabama will go as far as the elite guard can take them.

With Philon leading the way in the backcourt, Alabama has the offensive firepower to compete with anyone in the field. His ability to break down defenses and create scoring opportunities will be critical in close games, where guard play often determines who advances.

Alabama will be looking to make another run at a Final Four, and the team’s success sits squarely on the shoulders of Philon.
