Eagles WR Facing Major Pressure After Training Camp Struggles

With the Philadelphia Eagles dealing with a handful of injuries at the wide receiver position, the absences of DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon have given Jalen Hurts some unlikely targets to toss to.

Considering there are guys on the roster bubble who wouldn’t typically get these opportunities to run with the first team, the last few practices have changed the narrative a bit around the position. Darius Cooper seems to be benefiting the most.

Heading into training camp, Cooper wasn’t viewed as a lock to make the Eagles’ roster.

However, he’s been making a strong case for himself through the first two weeks of camp, and Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski is taking him off the bubble to “lock status.”

“Cooper has been the third-best receiver on the team throughout camp, and there’s a sizeable gap between him and whoever is fourth,” the insider wrote.

“He is going to make the team. We’re bumping him all the way up from the bubble to lock status. He jumped two categories.”

Last season, Cooper appeared in 13 games for the Eagles. He was targeted 11 times, catching nine of those passes for 92 yards.

Bad News For Hollywood Brown?

The 29-year-old Hollywood Brown was once viewed as a future NFL superstar. Coming out of Oklahoma, Brown was a first-round selection in 2019, landing with the Baltimore Ravens.

By year three, Brown improved to the point where he grabbed his first 1,000-yard season. After that year, the Ravens traded hi to the Arizona Cardinals. Brown was decent for the Cardinals, but regressed.

After posting 574 yards and four touchdowns in 2023, Brown joined the Kansas City Chiefs. Year one, he was mauled by injuries. Year two, he finished with 587 yards and five touchdowns. So, Brown never reached star status in the NFL, but his 90-game sample should be enough to have him locked as a key contributor in Philly.

However, training camp hasn’t gone his way. And if Cooper’s the third-best so far, that means Brown isn’t in the top three, as the Eagles have seen an impressive showing from Dontayvion Wicks and the top star, DeVonta Smith.

“There should probably be some pressure for Brown to pick up his game,” Kempski wrote, after noting that at least four wideouts have looked better than Brown.
