Eagles Add Former NFL QB to Offensive Coaching Staff

The Philadelphia Eagles need all the help they can get on the path to getting their offense back on track in 2026 — a path that now includes a former NFL quarterback as a late addition to their coaching staff.

According to multiple reports on Sunday, the Eagles have added longtime journeyman quarterback and former Houston Texans assistant coach Jerrod Johnson for their coaching staff.

“Former Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson is joining the Eagles’ coaching staff, source says,” NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo wrote on his official X account. “Johnson and Houston mutually parted ways so he could seek other opportunities. He heads to Philly to work alongside HC Nick Sirianni and new OC Sean Mannion … Johnson signed with the Eagles in 2011 and was with the team for a brief stint. Like pass game coordinator Josh Grizzard, Johnson interviewed for the team’s OC job recently before Mannion was hired.”

Johnson has deep ties to the Eagles’ current coaching staff, including working with current head coach Nick Sirianni when Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. He also worked with current offensive line coach Chris Kuper when he was with the Minnesota Vikings.

Texans, Johnson ‘Mutually Parted Ways’

Johnson landed the job in Philadelphia after spending the last 3 seasons with the Texans and helping guide the career of 2023 No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud, who was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year but has regressed the last 2 seasons.

He was also one of 7 candidates who interviewed for offensive coordinator for the Eagles after Kevin Patullo was fired following a home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Now, 3 of those candidates — Mannion, Josh Grizzard and Johnson — will all be on the Eagles coaching staff in 2026. Johnson also interviewed for the Eagles offensive coordinator job in 2024. That time, current New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore got the job and helped lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl win.

Tracking Jerrod Johnson’s Journeyman QB Career

Johnson was on track to become a high draft pick coming out of Texas A&M after earning All-Big 12 honors in 2009 but lost his job to future 1st round pick and Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill during his senior season in 2010.

After going undrafted in 2011, Johnson embarked on what’s been a pretty wild football odyssey. In 8 seasons of professional football, Johnson spent time with 11 different franchises across the NFL, United Football League, Arena Football League and Canadian Football League before closing out his career with the YCF Grit in the Your Call Football League — a league in which fans were able to pick the plays the teams ran.

Johnson went directly from his playing career into his coaching career. He spent 2 years as a Bill Walsh Diversity Fellow with the San Francisco 49ers and Colts before the Colts hired him as a full time offensive quality control coach in 2020. He spent 1 season as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Vikings before spending the last 3 seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Texans.

“His primary responsibility was helping develop C.J. Stroud, whom he had met when Stroud was a junior in high school,” The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander wrote on February 26. “But there was a desire from both Johnson and the Texans’ offensive staff to move on. The move happened prior to the combine.”
